What to do if the newborn baby has severe milk regurgitation

In our lives, many newborns will spill milk when feeding. In fact, sometimes the mother's breast milk is too sufficient, and the child eats in a hurry, which makes it easy to spill milk. Sometimes, if the child is too full, the mothers still insist on feeding, which is also easy to cause the child to spill milk, because the gastrointestinal function of the newborn is not particularly developed. So what should be done if the newborn is seriously regurgitating milk?

What to do if your newborn baby pours milk

1. Change the way milk powder is prepared

Adding cereal to your baby's regular milk or making the milk a little thicker will make reflux less likely to occur. However, milk that is too thick can easily cause gastrointestinal obstruction or diarrhea, which can also make the baby feel uncomfortable, so parents should also pay attention.

2. Burp your baby

When the baby finishes drinking milk, since the lower part of the stomach is filled with milk and the upper part is filled with air, it will cause stomach pressure, resulting in milk regurgitation and vomiting. Therefore, parents should burp their baby in time to expel the gas. As long as the pressure in the stomach is reduced, the incidence and frequency of vomiting and regurgitation of milk can naturally be reduced. If it is difficult to burp the baby, then parents should hold the baby upright and let the baby lie on their shoulders for at least 30 minutes, then raise the pillow and let the baby lie on the right side. This can effectively increase the speed of stomach emptying.

3. Drug treatment

If there is severe vomiting or regurgitation, you should ask your doctor to prescribe some medication to stimulate gastrointestinal motility to improve the regurgitation. However, medication is usually considered as a last resort, and other solutions should be considered as the main approach.

How to prevent babies from choking on milk

Feed at the right time: do not feed the baby when he is crying or laughing; do not wait until the baby is very hungry to feed, as the baby may choke if eating too fast; do not force the baby to feed after he is full, as forced feeding may cause accidents.

Correct posture: Breastfed babies should lie diagonally in the mother's arms (upper body at 30-45 degrees), and should not be fed while lying in bed. When bottle-feeding, the baby should not lie flat. Instead, he should lie in an inclined position with the bottom of the bottle higher than the nipple to prevent him from inhaling air.

Control the speed: When the mother secretes milk too quickly and the amount of milk is too much, she can gently press the areola with her fingers to slow down the flow of milk. The hole of the nipple for artificial feeding should not be too large, and the milk should flow out in drops rather than in a line when turned upside down.

Pay attention to observation: The mother's breast should not block the baby's nostrils. The mother must observe the baby's facial expression while feeding. If milk overflows from the corners of the baby's mouth or the area around the mouth and nose turns blue, the mother should stop feeding immediately. Infants who have experienced choking or premature babies should be closely observed or asked to ask a doctor for feeding guidance.

Expel gas from the stomach: After feeding, hold the baby upright on your shoulders and pat the baby's back to help expel gas from the stomach. It is best to hear the baby burp before putting the baby back in bed. The head of the bed should be raised 15 degrees. The child should lie on the right side for 30 minutes and then lie flat. Do not let the child sleep on his stomach to avoid sudden infant death.

Warm reminder: The organs of a newborn baby are not yet fully developed, and the shape of the stomach is not well developed, so it is easy for the baby to spill milk after drinking. If you are not careful, the baby may choke. Therefore, after feeding your baby, you should hold him quietly for about ten minutes before changing to another position. Do not shake him, and certainly do not lift him up and down. Also try to prevent him from struggling. Hold your baby in a position that makes him feel comfortable, and he will burp after ten minutes or so. This is because when the baby drinks milk, he drinks a lot of small bubbles, which slowly gather in the stomach to form a large bubble, and the baby will burp. If you want to put your baby on the bed or sofa after drinking milk, be careful not to let the baby lie flat. Try to let him lie on his side. In this way, even if the baby spills milk, it will flow out through the mouth and will not flow into the trachea.
