Is it normal for a two month old baby to suck his fingers?

We always teach our children to pay attention to hygiene, but newborn babies cannot understand what we are saying. We will find that many babies always have the habit of sucking their fingers, and we don’t know what their demands are. I can only use my own understanding to tell them not to suck their fingers and to pay attention to hygiene. But babies, sucking their fingers is due to the body's needs and is not unintentional. So, is it normal for a two-month-old baby to suck his fingers?

1. The need to suck

This is because they have a physiological need to suck, and fingers become a play tool for comforting themselves. Compared with formula-fed and breastfed babies, the former have far fewer opportunities to suck, and are therefore more likely to suck their thumbs.

2. Hunger and boredom

Thumb sucking is likely caused by hunger and boredom, and is a signal to the caregiver that feeding is needed. If the need for food is not met in time, the baby will have to suck his fingers to comfort himself and pass the boring time.

3. Lack of security

If parents seldom play games or talk with their babies, and rarely have physical contact with their babies, and the babies do not receive good care when they are sick, the babies will feel a lack of security, and sucking their fingers will become their way of self-comfort.

4. Relieve stress

Babies around six months old are very emotionally sensitive and care a lot about changes in their living environment and caregivers. If the frequency of changes is too high, the babies will feel fear and stress. In addition, if the baby faces tense family relationships, strict parents, and a living environment where he is constantly beaten and scolded, it will invisibly produce difficult-to-relieve stress. At this time, the baby will often escape and relieve stress by sucking his fingers.

5. Reverse reinforcement

Once a baby is discovered sucking his thumb, some parents will scold or beat the baby harshly, which will make the child's young mind even more frustrated and become depressed, and the thumb sucking behavior will become more serious. On the contrary, some parents pretend not to see their babies sucking their thumbs, take an overly casual attitude, fail to find out the reasons and seize the best time to correct it, which is likely to make thumb sucking a bad habit that continues even when the baby grows up.
