Why does the baby vomit when switching from breast milk to formula?

Mother’s breast milk is very important to the baby, because when the baby is just born, the stomach and intestines are still very fragile and can only eat the mother’s breast milk. However, when the baby grows to a certain age and month, the mother's breast milk will gradually decrease, and at this time the baby needs to be fed with supplementary milk powder. However, many babies will vomit when switching from breast milk to formula. Today I will introduce to you why babies vomit.

In fact, it is a very common phenomenon for babies to spit up milk. It is usually caused by physiological reasons and will not affect the baby's health. Specifically, the baby's stomach has a smaller capacity than that of an adult and is horizontal. The entrance where the esophagus connects to the stomach (also known as the cardia) is relatively loose. If the baby eats too much or turns over too early after feeding, milk may reflux through the esophagus and be spit out of the mouth. But in addition to this, there are other reasons why babies spit up:

The bottle is not anti-swelling, and the baby inhales too much "air"

If the bottle does not have an anti-flatulence design, internal pressure will be generated inside the bottle when the baby is sucking milk; if internal pressure is generated inside the bottle, the baby will not be able to suck milk from the bottle smoothly; if the baby cannot suck milk, the baby will swallow a lot of air from the nipple. When air enters the stomach, since gas is lighter than liquid, it will inevitably rise, break open the cardia and run out, bringing out a small amount of milk.

Therefore, babies who often spit up milk can try using anti-flatulence bottles (also called: anti-spitting milk bottles). This kind of bottle has been specially processed in details to avoid internal pressure in the bottle during milk sucking, thereby reducing the baby's inhalation of air and alleviating flatulence, spitting up and hiccups.

The milk powder is not digested and the baby's stomach cannot accept it

Is baby's spitting up related to milk powder? That's right. The baby's gastrointestinal immune function has not yet matured. When large-molecule milk protein enters the body, some babies will experience milk protein indigestion or allergy, which in turn causes gastrointestinal dysfunction and leads to problems such as regurgitation and vomiting. Therefore, babies who are prone to spitting up milk are best to choose milk powder that is easier to digest, such as hydrolyzed protein milk powder - which breaks down large-molecule milk protein into small-molecule protein. The baby's gastrointestinal acceptance is high, and the baby will no longer spit up milk frequently.

If the milk powder is not prepared properly, the baby will suffer when drinking milk

Review your steps for preparing milk powder. Have you ever shaken the bottle up and down violently because the milk powder dissolved slowly? You should change this method because it is easy for air to mix into the milk, causing the baby to inadvertently swallow a lot of air while feeding, which may cause milk to spill or spit up. So how do you prepare milk powder? Remember the following three steps.

① Bring tap water to a boil and wait for it to cool to the temperature indicated on the milk powder can (usually 40°C).

② According to the mixing ratio on the milk powder can, first add warm water to the bottle, and then pour an appropriate amount of milk powder into the bottle.

③Put on the nipple, hold the bottle tightly with both hands, and roll it back and forth horizontally. Remember to be gentle.
