Can I turn on the air conditioner when my baby has a cold in summer?

Children are actually very sensitive. Sometimes, when the seasons change, we catch a cold. Especially in summer, many babies will catch colds because of air conditioning. But when the baby has a cold, many mothers don’t know whether they should turn on the air conditioner. Can I turn on the air conditioner if my baby has a cold in summer? In fact, experts do not recommend turning on the air conditioner when your baby has a cold.

Can I turn on the air conditioner when my baby has a cold?

It is common for babies to catch colds in the summer. Normally, babies should not use air conditioning when they have a cold, especially when accompanied by a fever, as this will make them prone to bronchitis infection and aggravate the cold.

But if the high temperature continues, the baby will not be able to bear it. The baby needs to stay in an environment with suitable temperature, otherwise it is easy to get heatstroke.

So strictly speaking, if the baby has a cold in summer, he should not be directly exposed to the air conditioner, but he can stay in an air-conditioned environment with a temperature of about 28℃.

Precautions for babies using air conditioning

1. Timely ventilation

When the air conditioner is turned on, the room should be ventilated every 6 to 8 hours, and no longer than 12 hours, with each time ventilation lasting 20 to 30 minutes.

Especially when the air conditioner is turned on in the evening until going to bed at night, the air should be changed once before going to bed. A small window can be opened in the air-conditioned room to facilitate air exchange.

If you don’t want to turn off the air conditioner when ventilating, you can adjust the air conditioner cooling temperature to the highest. If your baby has allergies or respiratory problems, you can install an air purifier indoors to improve the air quality.

2. Cover yourself with a blanket

When your baby goes to bed at night, you should cover him with a quilt that is not too thick. It should cover sensitive parts such as the stomach, chest, shoulders, and joints. In short, do not let the air conditioner blow directly on the baby.

If your baby has the habit of kicking the quilt, you can make a sleeping bag for him.

3. Clean the air conditioning filter in time

About every half a month, parents should flush the air filter (filter membrane) of the air conditioner with plenty of clean water to ensure the indoor air quality. At the same time, the cooling plate in the air conditioner should also be cleaned regularly.

4. Monitor body temperature regularly

Take your baby's temperature at least once a day, just in case.
