Newborn baby's white eye has red bloodshot

Having a baby is a very happy thing. Raising a child is very hard, but it can also bring parents a full sense of accomplishment. Because many parents are first-time mothers or fathers and have no experience in this area, some things are still quite tricky. The appearance of red blood streaks in the white eyeballs of newborns is a big problem. The red blood streaks are usually caused by capillary dilation. Why does this phenomenon occur in newborns?

It depends on whether the baby's red bloodshot eyes are always there or only occasionally. Generally, healthy babies have this phenomenon because they are very sleepy, but there are strange things that attract them, so they can't sleep. Generally, it will get better after a good night's sleep. Some babies have bacterial infections because they rub their eyes with dirty fingers. Generally, gently wiping the corners of the eyes with warm salt water will be effective.

Bloodshot eyes may be caused by conjunctival congestion, which refers to obvious congestion around the edges of the eyelid conjunctiva or bulbar conjunctiva, with no congestion near the edge of the cornea. This symptom is common in conjunctivitis, trachoma, and nearby inflammation. Excessive drinking, long-term heavy smoking, dust, drugs, physical and chemical stimulation, lack of sleep, high fever, etc. can also cause conjunctival congestion. As long as you get enough sleep, it will go away on its own. Another cause of red eyes is ciliary congestion. It manifests as circular congestion around the outer edge of the cornea, flushing or dark red, and the direction of the blood vessels is unclear. Ciliary congestion indicates that there is a disease in an important part of the eyeball, which is common in keratitis due to various reasons, corneal ulcers, corneal foreign bodies, scleritis, iritis, glaucoma, endophthalmitis, etc. It can have varying degrees of vision impact and should be treated in the hospital in time. In severe cases, mixed congestion may occur, that is, conjunctival congestion and ciliary congestion exist at the same time.

In addition to eye congestion, another possible cause of red eyes is eye bleeding. Eyelid skin ruptures manifest as bleeding, which is easily identifiable by its bright red color. Small hemorrhages on the eyelid skin are seen after blunt eye trauma or severe coughing. High fever and sepsis may cause large areas of bleeding. Purple-red subcutaneous hemorrhages are common in heavier direct eye injuries, and may also be caused by injuries to the head, nose, and sinuses that affect the eyes. Fractures of the top of the orbit can cause hemorrhage on the upper eyelid, fractures of the orbital floor and skull base can cause hemorrhage on the lower eyelid, and fractures of the orbital apex often cause hemorrhage on the outer side of the eyelid.

Subconjunctival hemorrhage appears in strips, flakes, irregular shapes, and is bright red. It is purple-red when there is heavy bleeding. Common causes include eye trauma, severe coughing, dry stools, vigorous rubbing of the eyes, and arteriosclerosis in the elderly. If you frequently have unexplained eye bleeding, you should see a doctor to check for systemic bleeding disorders.

There are many reasons for red eyes, the most common of which is eye infection. Such as corneal ulcers, conjunctivitis and metastatic eye inflammation caused by systemic infections such as colds, measles, typhus, pneumonia, sepsis, eyelid dermatitis, blepharitis, sty or orbital infection near the eyeball, etc., can all cause red eyes.
