Why does my child keep having fever?

Once a child gets sick in life, it will make parents very worried, especially when the child has a fever. Although fever is a common disease, it will also make many parents feel helpless. In addition, some babies will have repeated fevers. The reasons for this situation are also relatively complicated. It is best to go to the hospital for a detailed examination. So why do children have repeated fevers?

First, why do children have recurring fevers? There are generally two reasons for children's fever. One is non-disease reasons, that is, they are affected by the external environment, such as wearing too many clothes, insufficient water intake, poor air circulation in the house, strenuous exercise, the influence of drugs, etc.; the other reason is caused by disease. Infants under three months old often have fevers due to infections such as respiratory tract, urinary tract, gastrointestinal tract or otitis media; infants over three months old. The most common causes of fever are colds, otitis media, and urinary tract infections.

Second, figure out what constitutes a fever. The normal body temperature for children is between 36.2℃ and 38℃. Generally speaking, a fever is defined as a rectal temperature above 37.8°C, an oral temperature above 37.3°C, and an axillary temperature above 36.8°C. Find out how to take your temperature. For babies, measuring axillary temperature is more convenient and less irritating. It can be measured with a mercury thermometer or an ear thermometer. If a mercury thermometer is used, shake the mercury column to below 36°C before use and observe for more than 5 minutes. However, please note that you should not measure your temperature immediately after bathing, eating, or exercising. It is generally necessary to wait half an hour before measuring it.

Third, because children have poor ability to adapt to the external environment and their immune systems have not yet fully developed, any discomfort can easily lead to fever symptoms, or their body temperature may rise again quickly after taking medicine to reduce the fever. Especially in the hot summer, if parents use the air conditioner improperly or the baby drinks less water and cannot adapt to the high temperature weather, it will cause repeated fever.

Why do children have recurring fevers? There are many causes of fever: mainly bacterial and viral invasion, which cause respiratory and gastrointestinal infections and lead to fever. What parents can do is to provide adequate nutrition according to the child's age and physical development, and add complementary foods in a timely, reasonable and balanced manner. Parents should be especially reminded that if their child has a fever for more than three consecutive days without improvement or if the baby has a high fever or convulsions, they should seek medical attention in time to identify the cause and provide symptomatic treatment.
