Is baby's bloating caused by eating too much?

Is baby's bloating caused by eating too much?

New mothers will find that sometimes the baby's belly feels bulging and very hard. This symptom is bloating, which is mainly caused by crying after feeding, and the failure to expel the gas in the stomach and intestines, which leads to bloating. During the bloating stage, you can feed the baby less often, and feed the baby only when he is hungry. Rub the baby's belly more often to promote the secretion of gas.

Symptoms : What are the possible symptoms of intestinal gas in babies?

For new mothers, it is difficult to distinguish whether the baby has intestinal gas. I always hear mothers around me say "intestinal gas", but how can I tell whether my baby has intestinal gas? Usually when the baby shows the following symptoms, it means that he is bloating:

1. The stomach growls and you fart a lot, sometimes loudly, and sometimes you poop when you fart;

2. The stool contains bubbles and the frequency of bowel movements is abnormal, which can be more or less;

3. Competing with oneself, exerting force, and standing up straight, kicking the arms and legs wildly, and sometimes the face turns red;

4. Frequent feeding, especially breastfeeding, and the baby wants to feed even when he is sleepy;

5. Spitting up milk and spitting up milk;

6. Sleeping less, sleeping restlessly, and crying more.

Reason : Baby's intestinal flatulence may be due to these

1. Physiological factors : Gastrointestinal function has not yet matured

Because babies are young, their gastrointestinal digestive systems are immature, and the lactase content in the small intestine is insufficient. Therefore, the lactose in both milk and breast milk enters the large intestine before being fully digested in the small intestine. It is fermented in the digestive tract by intestinal bacteria and other digestive enzymes, causing the proliferation of gas-producing bad bacteria and forming flatulence.

2. Daily factors : swallowing too much air during breastfeeding

Simply put, the baby swallows air while drinking milk and becomes bloated:

① For babies who are exclusively breastfed, if the mother eats too much gas-producing food during the breastfeeding period, the baby will easily get bloating after drinking breast milk;

② For babies fed with formula milk, the nipple hole of the bottle is not of appropriate size, so it is easy for them to inhale air when drinking milk;

③ Babies are also prone to swallowing air when they cry loudly.

1. Burping after feeding

Burp your baby promptly after feeding (the burp is the gas in the stomach). There are three ways to burp:

① Vertical holding: Hold the baby vertically after feeding, let his head rest on the adult's shoulder, then pat the baby's back gently from bottom to top with your hand in a hollow shape until the baby burps;

② Sitting position: Place the baby on the mother's lap. The mother holds the baby with one hand and pays attention to supporting the head. The hand is hollow and pats the baby's back from bottom to top.

③ Prone position: Place the baby on the mother's legs in a semi-prone position with the head high and feet low. Protect the baby's head with one hand and use the other hand in a hollow shape to gently pat the back from bottom to top.

2. Use a warm towel to apply heat to the abdomen

Mothers can also try covering the baby's abdomen with a warm towel. The hot compress on the belly can promote the baby's intestinal peristalsis and relieve the discomfort caused by bloating. But pay attention to the temperature of the towel so as not to scald your baby.

3. Massage your baby’s abdomen

Moderate massage can promote intestinal peristalsis and gas discharge, relieving baby's intestinal gas.

Specific steps : Wash your hands, warm or rub your hands first, then use your palms to gently massage the baby's belly in a clockwise direction with the baby's navel as the center. Gently massage 15-20 times each time (do two sets), massage for about 5 minutes, and massage several times a day.
