Children's poor intelligence gives parents a headache

Nowadays, there are many children with low intelligence. The causes of children's poor intelligence may be environmental pollution, pesticide residues or diseases, etc. Parents are most worried about their children's poor intelligence. Therefore, parents should understand the symptoms of their children's low intelligence in order to detect the disease as early as possible. At the same time, they should also know which factors may cause their children's low intelligence, and make sure to keep their children away from factors that can be avoided.

1. What are the manifestations of mental retardation?

1. Abnormal facial appearance

Generally, a child's face is either very quiet when falling asleep, or he or she will be interested in the things around him or her, and then make some expressions to attract the attention of people around him or her. However, if the baby is mentally retarded, he or she will show a lack of interest in the things around him or her, and his or her face will be dull. Some children will also have symptoms such as slanted eyes and drooling.

2. Speech delay

A normal child will be able to imitate sounds at 7 or 8 months old, will call mom and dad at around one year old, will be able to say a dozen words at one and a half years old, can understand simple instructions, will be able to ask simple questions at around 2 years old, and can basically express his or her thoughts at around 3 years old. Therefore, any symptoms that appear four or five months or even one or two years behind should be regarded as a sign of intellectual disability.

3. Others

A small number of children with mental retardation may show some motor delays, poor vision and hearing. These children are very quiet and these symptoms can be tested at home. Older children may also have problems with concentration.

What are the causes of mental retardation?

1. Mechanical damage and hypoxia of the brain account for 19.6%. Brain damage can be caused by physical or mechanical factors before, after, and during birth, such as birth trauma and craniocerebral trauma. Severe perinatal blood loss, anemia, heart failure, lung disease, neonatal asphyxia, intracranial hemorrhage, etc., as well as drowning, anesthesia accidents, and brain hypoxia after persistent epileptic seizures.

2. Social and psychological factors account for 8.2%. These children do not have organic brain lesions, and their condition is mainly caused by adverse environmental factors such as neuropsychological damage and sensory deprivation, such as severe lack of early appropriate stimulation and education.

3. Infection and poisoning accounted for 12.3%. Infection refers to brain infections before and after birth, such as rubella, cytomegalovirus, toxoplasmosis, herpes simplex virus and many other viral infections.

4. Gross brain diseases account for 0.7%. Including tumors, degenerative diseases of unknown causes, neurocutaneous syndromes, cerebrovascular diseases, etc.

3. How to treat mental retardation:

1. Etiological treatment: For those whose etiology has been identified, such as chronic disease, poisoning, long-term malnutrition, hearing and vision impairment, efforts should be made to eliminate the cause as much as possible to partially or completely restore their intelligence.

2. Training and rehabilitation should be coordinated with the application of medical, social, educational and vocational training measures to train patients according to their age and severity of mental retardation so that they can reach the highest possible intellectual level.
