Can children take ceftriaxone?

Nowadays, no matter through what channel, we often hear about rational use of medicines. Now many people are also more concerned about the use of medicines. They dare not take medicines randomly after getting sick. They will first understand whether the disease is consistent with the characteristics of the body and whether the medicine can be used to treat the disease before taking it. Children's colds, fevers, and bacterial infections all require treatment with antibiotics. Everyone knows that cephalosporin is a common anti-inflammatory drug, but everyone does not know that there are different types of cephalosporins. If you choose the wrong one or use it wrongly, these will have the opposite effect. You must first understand the knowledge about hair clearly so that you can give your child medicine and judge whether your child can take cephalosporin.

Rational use of antibiotics is a very important principle.

For common bacterial infections, you should start with low-level antibiotics, and you should start with antibiotics with a narrow antibacterial spectrum coverage.

For example, there are about 30 commonly used cephalosporin drugs, which mothers call "cephalosporins". According to their research and development years and differences in antibacterial properties, cephalosporin drugs are divided into four generations.

The fourth-generation cephalosporin is currently the most powerful cephalosporin with antibacterial ability. Routine infections should be treated with first-generation cephalosporins. Not all drugs called "cephalosporins" can be used casually.

I will share these four generations of cephalosporins with you below, but I will mainly introduce the cephalosporins for oral administration. Cephalosporins administered by injection are not interpreted for the time being.

First-generation cephalosporins: This type of drug was previously called cephalosporins. For example, cephalexin (cephalosporin IV), cefazolin (cephalosporin V, not oral), cefradine (cephalosporin VI), cefadroxil, cefaclor, etc. The dosage form suitable for children can be granules or dry suspension.

Cefaclor dry suspension is a first-generation cephalosporin. It comes in strawberry flavor and is easily available in major hospitals and pharmacies. It is more suitable for common bacterial infections in infants and young children.

Although cefaclor dry suspension belongs to the first-generation cephalosporin, its antibacterial spectrum is slightly broader than other first-generation cephalosporins. Then why are other first-generation cephalosporins not recommended?

The reason is simple. Many hospitals and private pharmacies do not sell several other first-generation cephalosporins in dosages and forms suitable for children. If you buy it, you can also choose it.

Second-generation cephalosporins: This type of cephalosporin has a wider antibacterial spectrum than the first-generation cephalosporins, and can fight against bacteria that the first-generation cephalosporins cannot.

At present, the commonly used drugs for common infectious diseases in pediatrics are cefuroxime granules, dispersible tablets or chewable tablets, and cefuroxime axetil granules, dry suspension or dispersible tablets.

Third-generation cephalosporins: The overall strength of this type of cephalosporin is further improved, but some abilities are weaker than the first generation, and some abilities are stronger than the second generation. This shows that sometimes choosing a higher-grade cephalosporin may not be as effective as a lower-grade one.

For example, cefdinir dispersible tablets or granules, cefixime granules, dispersible tablets or dry suspension, and cefpodoxime axetil dry suspension or dispersible tablets are all third-generation cephalosporins.
