What causes nausea and retching in newborns?

If a newborn baby experiences nausea and retching, it is important to understand whether it is caused by improper diet or poor feeding. For example, if a newborn baby is fed too much milk, the child's digestive ability may not be able to keep up, which can easily cause nausea and retching. If this happens all the time, you should go to the hospital for examination in time to see if it is a developmental problem or a digestive tract abnormality.

1. Excessive feeding during the neonatal period

Improper milk formula, swallowing a lot of air while feeding; infants and young children eat too much at one time or the food is difficult to digest.

2. Abnormal digestive function:

Systemic infectious diseases, such as upper respiratory tract infection, throat inflammation, pharyngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, etc., or high fever, nausea, loss of appetite, are often accompanied by dry retching.

3. Developmental problems:

Due to the functional defects of the lower esophageal sphincter, gastric juice or bile flows back into the esophagus, causing dry retching. For some babies, this may last for several months and then gradually improve.

4. Add warm water

If your baby has dry retching, it is recommended to give him more warm water, change the types of food, and try to eat light and easily digestible complementary foods.

5. The opening size of the nipple should be appropriate

When bottle-feeding, the hole in the nipple should be of the right size and the nipple must be filled with milk to prevent the baby from inhaling air. If the baby is teething, you can use a nipple with larger holes to drink milk to reduce the pain caused by sucking.

6. Pick up the baby gently after feeding

Rest the baby's head on the mother's shoulder and pat the baby's back gently to expel air from the stomach. Do not change the baby's position frequently after feeding, change the diaper before feeding, and do not change the diaper for the time being after feeding.
