What materials are used for children’s dental fillings?

Many children have unhealthy teeth since childhood due to personal diet or habits. It is popular among young people to go to the hospital to fill their teeth. Although filling a tooth is not dangerous, the pain is very intense. If the operation is not done properly, a second filling may be needed. At the same time, the choice of filling materials is also very important. Children’s gums are much more tender than adults’, so filling materials need to be selected more carefully.

1. Gold filling:

Gold fillings are generally not used in children's teeth. However, gold fillings are less likely to be rejected by gum tissue and can last for more than 20 years. For the reasons listed above, many dental authorities consider gold to be the best filling.

2. Silver powder (silver) filler:

Often used in unusual tooth locations. More durable and relatively cheap. Silver is darker in color and more noticeable than porcelain or composite fillings.

3. Synthetic (plastic) resins:

Suitable for filling small areas, with a service life of 3-5 years. The synthetic resin is the same color as your teeth, so it has a more natural appearance. Place the filling mixture in the tooth cavity until the filling hardens. However, since synthetic fillers will break or wear out over time, they are not suitable for filling large areas.

4. Porcelain filling:

Also called porcelain onlays, these fillings match the color of your teeth and are less likely to stain. Most teeth can generally be restored with porcelain materials. The cost is comparable to that of a gold filling.
