What should I do if my baby coughs and vomits? Parents can do this

If the baby has a cough and vomiting symptoms, parents must pay attention to it. They can give the child cough medicine under the doctor's advice. In addition, they should find out the cause based on the baby's condition and then treat it according to the cause. This will be more effective.

1. Don’t blindly give your baby cough medicine

Some parents see their baby coughing, so their first reaction is to give them cough medicine, but experts say that babies should not be given cough medicine blindly. Ji Lianmei, a pharmacist at Beijing United Family Hospital, pointed out in her Weibo that coughing is not a disease, but a symptom caused by different diseases. Therefore, controlling cough cannot rely on cough drops, but requires treating the disease that causes the cough.

2. Non-pathological cough

Physiological defense reflex: It is normal for babies to cough gently when they wake up in the morning. This is just to clear the mucus that accumulates in the respiratory tract at night. Parents do not need to worry. In autumn and winter, babies' respiratory tracts are dry, which can easily cause coughing. It is recommended that they drink more warm water.

Foreign body inhalation: such as milk, drinks, and food residues accidentally entering the airway and causing choking and coughing. This coughing may help to expel foreign matter.

Irritating cough caused by cold air: When the baby goes out suddenly, the cold air irritates the respiratory mucosa and causes an irritating cough. Take your baby to outdoor activities frequently. Only a respiratory tract that has been trained can withstand the stimulation of cold air.

3. Pathological cough

Cough caused by cold: Generally no special treatment is required. Feed your baby more warm water, ginger juice or onion water. Try to use less cold medicine, do not feed cough syrup, cough tablets or other cough suppressants, and do not abuse antibiotics. If you have the flu, seek medical attention immediately.

Cough caused by respiratory tract inflammation: Excessive or purulent sputum indicates a secondary bacterial infection, and appropriate antibiotics should be used for treatment based on the doctor's advice.

Cough caused by allergies: Cough caused by allergens such as pollen, animal hair and excrement. Babies with a family history of asthma and other allergic diseases should pay special attention and seek medical treatment as soon as possible.

4. Traditional Chinese medicine remedies for treating cough:

1. Perilla porridge: 10 grams of perilla leaves, 50 grams of japonica rice, 3 slices of ginger, and 3 dates. First cook porridge with japonica rice. When the porridge is almost cooked, add perilla leaves, ginger and jujube, and drink it while it is hot.

2. Scallion porridge: 50 grams of rice, 5 slices of ginger, 5 pieces of scallion with roots, 5 ml of rice vinegar, add appropriate amount of water to cook porridge, drink while hot.

3. Almond and radish decoction: 10 grams of almonds (sweet), 3 slices of ginger, 100 grams of white radish, decocted in water, 1 dose per day.

First, boil the tangerine peel and ginger in water, take out the decoction once every 15 minutes, add water and boil again, take out the decoction three times in total, combine the decoctions, simmer over low heat to concentrate, add honey when it becomes thick and sticky, turn off the heat when it boils, and bottle for later use.
