What to do if your baby chokes on milk

Babies are prone to choking on milk when they are one year old. At these times, some mothers will subconsciously lean their babies on their shoulders, but this is also dangerous for the baby, as the milk can easily enter the trachea. So what should you do if a baby chokes on milk?

1. Postural drainage. If the choking is mild (the baby coughs but does not turn purple), turn the baby's face to one side and pat the baby's back with your empty palm. If the baby chokes severely (with a purple face), he or she should be laid prone on an adult's lap, with the upper body leaning forward 45-60 degrees, and the back should be patted four or five times to help drain the milk out of the trachea.

2. To remove foreign objects from the mouth, you can wrap gauze around your finger (a handkerchief, wet wipes, etc. can be used in an emergency) and insert it into the baby's mouth to remove the milk in it to avoid inhaling milk into the trachea again when inhaling.

3. Observe the baby's crying and complexion. If the baby is not crying and has a purple complexion, it indicates that the situation is very dangerous. When dialing 120 for help, you should also perform preliminary cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the baby.

In order to prevent your baby from choking on milk, you should pay attention to the following during feeding:

1. The breastfeeding posture should be "three-close": the baby's mouth and lower jaw should be close to the mother's breast, the mother and child's chests should be close to each other, and the abdomens should be close to each other.

2. Pay attention to the speed and amount of feeding. If the mother has a lot of milk, you can pinch the breast or nipple with your fingers to control the speed of feeding. The baby should feed for about 20 minutes at a time, and it is best not to exceed 30 minutes.
