Why are babies more likely to catch colds after nebulization?

Ms. Yuan’s baby Jia Jia is over 4 years old this year. He suffers from asthma and often coughs. The doctor said that he could do nebulization, but Jia Jia would make a noise every time he did nebulization. Later, Jiajia's cough was cured, but she caught cold easily and sometimes vomited acid. Ms. Yuan wanted to know if this was a side effect of atomization.

A. Does nebulization have any side effects?

It is very common for children with respiratory diseases to receive nebulizer treatment. Nebulizer uses a high-speed oxygen gas flow to turn the drug solution into mist, which is inhaled by the child through the respiratory tract. Nebulization can relieve spasms, thin sputum, and help expectoration. It is also effective for respiratory infections, inflammation, and edema.

Nebulizer inhalation can treat respiratory infections and eliminate inflammation. It can also moisten the airways, promote the coughing up of sputum, and make the nasopharynx less dry and uncomfortable. Especially in the treatment of childhood asthma, nebulizer has a better effect. Atomization disperses the drug solution into fine droplets, which has the characteristics of rapid effect, small drug dosage and mild adverse reactions. Therefore, the so-called side effects that parents worry about are often caused by some misunderstandings.

B. Why do you feel uncomfortable after atomization?

So, why do many children feel uncomfortable after nebulization? Many nebulizer solutions contain hormones, and the small matter of "drying the mouth and nose" should never be ignored. In particular, parents of young children should not just leave it at that after nebulization. Instead, they should gently dry the child's face, mouth and nose with a wrung-out wet towel after each nebulization inhalation. Because the facial skin of young children is thin and rich in blood vessels, residual medicine can be absorbed, which may increase adverse reactions. Drying your mouth and nose can prevent residual mist droplets from irritating the skin of your mouth and nose, and avoid skin allergies or damage. In addition, residual mist droplets remaining on the skin of the mouth and nose may cause children to catch a cold.

Nebulization is the process of vaporizing the drug and then inhaling it to diffuse it into the respiratory tract and even the lungs, thereby achieving the therapeutic effect. However, in order to allow the drug to fully exert its local effect, try not to eat half an hour before nebulization inhalation to avoid the mist irritating the esophagus and causing vomiting during nebulization inhalation. Eat 20-30 minutes after nebulization. Also be careful not to get the aerosol liquid into your eyes.

C. Control the time and pose well

The time of nebulization inhalation depends on the volume of the medicine solution. From the perspective of children, nebulization for 10-15 minutes is enough, and it can be done 2-3 times a day.

When children are receiving nebulizer inhalation treatment, it is appropriate to adopt a relaxed upright posture, that is, when sitting, let the child sit upright, do not lean on the sides at will, cover the baby's mouth and nose with a mask, exhale slowly and deeply, and pause for a moment at the end of inhalation. When children are crying, parents can demonstrate by themselves and use words to eliminate the children's fear so that the effect of atomization can be best.
