What are the symptoms of dacryocystitis in infants and young children?

Infants and young children have tears and snot all the time since they were young. Many parents think that this is a process of their children's development and they also imagine that they have gone through this process themselves. Therefore, they do not pay any attention to the phenomenon of their children's tears. They even think that this symptom of their children is normal and will be fine when the children grow up. However, they do not understand that this condition of their children is likely to be caused by dacryocystitis. So what are the symptoms of dacryocystitis in infants and young children?

Dacryocystitis is a common eye disease in infants, which is characterized by the baby's eyes often being tearful. There are a lot of thick secretions flowing out of the baby's eyes. The age of onset can be early or late. Some babies have symptoms on the first day after birth, while others may appear about a week or a month later.

The tear duct system generally includes tear ducts, lacrimal canaliculi, common lacrimal duct, and nasolacrimal duct. Children's tears flow into the nasal cavity through these parts. We usually say "tears and snot". When you are excited or excited or when children are crying, tears appear in their eyes. The tears will flow into the nasal cavity and the mouth through the tear duct drainage system. When you cry, you will feel salty in your mouth. In fact, the salty taste is tears. In normal children, the tear ducts are unobstructed and tears can be discharged through normal channels. Children with blocked tear ducts cannot secrete tears normally.

Before a newborn is born, there is a membrane at the nasal opening of the tear duct. Normally, this membrane will rupture automatically after the baby is born. Children with newborn dacryocystitis cannot break this membrane, or there is a congenital malformation at the opening of the nasolacrimal duct, the bone has grown, and there is no normal tear duct. Such children do not have a normal tear excretion system, so the tears will flow out along the original tear puncta. Many parents said that after our baby was born, tears flowed out from the corners of his eyes when he cried. This is a symptom of tear duct obstruction. Some parents said that in addition to tears, their children have a lot of eye mucus in the corners of their eyes when they wake up in the morning. The mucus is yellow or even green. The large amount of eye mucus is caused by blocked tear ducts and secondary infection.

These are the common symptoms of dacryocystitis in children. If you find that your child's tears are falling, you cannot rule out the possibility that your child has dacryocystitis. When a child has dacryocystitis, you must take relevant measures to stop the child's tears from falling. Feed the child light food for a long time and avoid blowing wind into the child's eyes, as this will make the child's tears fall more severely.
