Why does my child’s lower eyelid become red and swollen?

If we find that our eyelids are red and swollen in life, it is probably caused by poor sleep quality the night before or too little sleep. If you make up for your sleep in time, this situation will disappear and there is no need to worry. If this situation occurs in children, it may not be so simple. So, what is the reason for the redness and swelling of the child's lower eyelid?

Eyelid edema is what we usually call eyelid swelling, which is a relatively common phenomenon in clinical practice. There are many causes of eyelid edema, which can be generally divided into physiological and pathological causes:

Physiological eyelid edema: For example, lack of sleep at night, sleeping too long, or sleeping with a pillow that is too low at night, which affects the blood return to the face. Some women also experience eyelid edema during menstruation. However, this type of eyelid edema is more common in healthy people, has little effect on the body, and often disappears naturally.

Pathological eyelid edema: Clinically, it can be divided into inflammatory eyelid edema and non-inflammatory eyelid edema.

In addition to eyelid edema, inflammatory eyelid edema also has symptoms such as local redness, swelling, heat, and pain.

Children with puffy eyes should have their urine checked

Puffy eyes are a symptom of nephrotic syndrome. Therefore, when parents find that their children’s eyes are swollen, they must carefully find out the cause. If it is not because of drinking too much water before going to bed or being affected by the surrounding environment, it is very likely that there is a problem with the kidneys.

Urine testing is an important way to detect whether a child has kidney disease. Children with kidney disease often have proteinuria. This is because kidney disease causes increased capillary permeability in the glomeruli, allowing protein in the body to leak from the kidneys into the urine, and a routine urine test will show positive for proteinuria. In this way, a child's kidney disease can be easily detected through a urine test.

A routine urine test can intuitively reflect the functional status of the kidneys. When healthy people undergo routine urine tests, the urine protein index is usually negative. If the test results show that the urine protein is positive, it means that there is a certain lesion in the kidney. Parents should be careful at this time and take their babies for timely treatment.
