Three-year-old baby with rhinitis coughs at night

The most common symptom of rhinitis is itching inside the nasal cavity, so rhinitis is also a very uncomfortable nasal problem. If parents do not pay attention to the treatment of their children's runny nose since childhood, it is easy for the children to develop rhinitis. When a three-year-old baby has rhinitis and coughs at night, what treatments can be taken?

Can rhinitis cause coughing in children?

Rhinitis in children may cause coughing. Surveys show that postnasal drip syndrome has a high incidence rate in children under 10 years old. People with allergies or suffering from chronic rhinitis, sinusitis, nasal polyps, etc. are more likely to suffer from this syndrome, especially when the weather changes, the symptoms are more obvious and severe.

Postnasal drip syndrome can cause coughing during the day and at night, but it is more concentrated at night, which is mainly related to the supine sleeping position. In addition, it often causes severe coughing when waking up in the morning. Experts explain that this is because nasal secretions stick to the nasopharynx at night. When you stand up after getting up, the secretions flow down and irritate the pharynx.

If the baby has rhinitis and has recurrent coughing, and the cough has the characteristics described above, postnasal drip syndrome should be highly suspected. Parents should take their babies to an ENT department and ask a specialist to examine, evaluate and provide symptomatic treatment. In addition to postnasal drip syndrome, gastroesophageal reflux and cough variant asthma are also clinical causes of recurrent cough. Therefore, if your baby coughs repeatedly, you should identify the cause and treat it accordingly.

We should also pay attention to preventing situations that may cause postnasal drip syndrome in our daily lives. For example, the weather is relatively cold now and many families are using heating. If there is a baby with allergic rhinitis at home, you should still pay attention to cleaning the air conditioner filter regularly to avoid the attack of allergic rhinitis in the baby.

Complications of rhinitis in children

1. Acute sinusitis: Since the sinus openings are located in the nasal passages, bacteria enter the sinuses and cause acute sinusitis.

2. Acute non-suppurative otitis media: Non-suppurative otitis media is caused by congestion and swelling of the mucous membrane at the opening of the Eustachian tube in the nasopharynx, resulting in a feeling of fullness and blockage in the ear, decreased hearing, or tinnitus, and effusion in the tympanic cavity.

3. Acute suppurative otitis media: Acute rhinitis may cause acute suppurative otitis media, which will cause severe pain in the ear, or obvious fever, and then yellow pus will flow out of the ear. After pus flows out of the ear, symptoms such as fever and ear pain will be significantly relieved.

4. Acute pharyngitis: Acute rhinitis may be accompanied by acute pharyngitis or cause acute pharyngitis. Throat pain occurs, which worsens when swallowing, or there may be throat discomfort, spitting, "crunching" in the throat, and coughing.

5. Acute laryngitis: Acute rhinitis may be accompanied by acute laryngitis, or cause acute laryngitis. The main symptoms of acute laryngitis are hoarseness or hoarseness, unclear voice when speaking, and may be accompanied by itchy throat and cough. If an infant under three years old develops acute laryngitis or acute subglottic laryngitis, he or she may experience wheezing, phlegm in the throat, and cough.

6. Tracheitis and lung infection: If acute rhinitis causes tracheitis or lung infection, the fever symptoms will be obvious, the cough symptoms will worsen, the spirit will be low, and rales will be present when auscultating the lungs.
