Why does my child urinate less?

Why does my child urinate less?

Children have a faster metabolism and should urinate more frequently than adults. In addition, children's bladders can store relatively less urine, which can lead to more urination. If a child urinates less, in addition to drinking less water, you should be alert to some medical reasons. Let's take a look at why children urinate less.

Why does my child urinate less?

1. Children may urinate less because of lack of water

The so-called oliguria in children means that the daily urine volume of school-age children is less than 400 ml, that of preschool children is less than 300 ml, and that of infants and young children is less than 200 ml. Anuria means daily urine volume is less than 30-50 ml. If your child's urine volume suddenly decreases compared to usual, you should first consider whether the child is not drinking enough water or the weather is too hot. After all, if you drink too much water, then the urine will definitely increase. If you drink too little water, then the urine will also decrease. If these reasons are ruled out and the child still urinates less, it is possible that the child has a disease.

2. Children's oliguria may be caused by various diseases

Pathological decrease in urine volume can be seen when children become dehydrated due to severe diarrhea and severe vomiting; a more common cause is kidney disease, such as urethral stenosis and obstruction in children, acute nephritis, acute exacerbation of chronic nephritis, renal failure caused by various chronic kidney diseases, and acute renal failure. If anuria occurs, it means that kidney function is severely damaged. Therefore, when you find that your child's urine volume has decreased and you can't find the cause, you should take your child to the hospital for treatment in time to avoid delaying the disease.

What to do if your child urinates less

1. As the baby grows older, the bladder storage capacity also increases, and nighttime urination will decrease. Some babies will no longer urinate at night during this period. There is no need to worry as long as the daytime urine volume is normal.

2. It is recommended to replenish your baby with water on a regular basis, especially now that the weather is dry, so you should pay special attention. In addition, you can let your baby eat more fresh vegetables and fruits.

3. Pathological decrease in urine volume is generally seen in severe diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration caused by loss of body fluids. If the baby with diarrhea has a significantly reduced urine volume, be alert to dehydration and take oral rehydration saline. If your baby is vomiting and cannot take the rehydration salts, he or she needs to go to the hospital and may need an IV to correct the dehydration. At the same time, you should take oral medications to treat diarrhea, such as Smecta. It is best to do a routine stool examination to further identify the pathogen.

4. Some other urinary system diseases can also cause decreased urine volume. If your baby does not show any abnormal symptoms, don’t worry. If there are any abnormal symptoms, you should seek medical attention and receive symptomatic treatment in time.
