Causes of red and swollen eyelids in babies

As we all know, eyelids play a very important role in our human body. If there is a problem with our eyelids, it will not only make us feel uncomfortable but also affect our image. In addition, problems with eyelids can even affect our eyesight, so everyone must pay attention to protecting their eyelids in daily life. The baby's eyelids are very fragile. Below we will introduce to you the reasons for the redness and swelling of the baby's eyelids.

Eyelid edema is what we usually call eyelid swelling, which is a relatively common phenomenon. There are many causes of eyelid edema, which can be generally divided into physiological and pathological causes:

Physiological eyelid edema: For example, lack of sleep at night, sleeping too long, or sleeping with a pillow that is too low at night, which affects the blood return to the face. This type of eyelid edema is more common in healthy people, has no effect on the body, and can often subside naturally.

Pathological eyelid edema: Clinically, it can be divided into inflammatory eyelid edema and non-inflammatory eyelid edema.

In addition to eyelid edema, inflammatory eyelid edema also has symptoms such as local redness, swelling, heat, and pain.

Common causes include:

1. Acute inflammation of the eyelids, such as stye, erysipelas, etc.

2. Trauma of the eyelids, such as chemical injuries and insect stings.

3. Inflammation around the eyes, such as acute dacryocystitis, orbital periostitis, etc.

As for non-inflammatory eyelid edema, it is more common in:

1. Allergic diseases or allergy to eye drops.

2. Acute and chronic nephritis.

3. Heart disease and hypothyroidism.

4. Idiopathic neurovascular eyelid edema.

Therefore, when a child has eyelid edema, it is most important to identify the cause of the edema.

The baby's health will concern the parents. When the baby has red and swollen eyelids, it may be caused by eczema or edema, or it may be caused by lack of sleep or a pillow that is too low. Parents can pay close attention to the baby's condition. If the baby's eyes and face are severely red and swollen, they need to go to the hospital for treatment so as not to affect the baby's health.
