What is the best way to treat children’s stuttering?

Children are the fruit of love and the future of the family. But some children are "different" and speak differently from other children. This often prevents them from expressing themselves properly and causes them to be discriminated against by children of the same age. This form is stuttering, which not only makes it difficult for children to express themselves, but also makes parents worried. Today I will tell you how to correct your child’s stuttering.

Stuttering is a very complex speech disorder. Stutterers not only have abnormal speech behaviors, but often also have emotional distress and changes in their attitudes and ways of dealing with things. Different stutterers have different specific manifestations. Due to the complex nature of stuttering, the treatment of stuttering is also very complex and diverse. Currently, stuttering treatment is mainly focused on non-drug treatment, including speech training, psychotherapy, bioelectric feedback metronome, changing vocalization methods, delayed speech feedback methods, sound masking, etc.

Treatment should be tailored to the individual's stuttering characteristics, personality, emotions, behaviors, etc., and appropriate treatment methods should be selected for the individual.

Mild and moderate stuttering in children can heal itself, but severe stuttering requires correction. It is generally believed that about 80% of children's stuttering can heal itself as they grow older, but early intervention by parents or therapists is important. First of all, we must eliminate parents’ disappointment and discriminatory attitudes, remind children to speak slowly, do not criticize or punish children, ease their nervousness, enhance their confidence, reduce their fear of stuttering, and prevent them from paying too much attention to their speaking process.

When a person who stutters follows someone else speaking, he or she stutters less and speaks naturally and fluently. Therefore, foreign countries began to study the principles in this area in the 1950s, and introduced delayed auditory feedback instruments in the 1960s to simulate this effect. When the voice of one's speech is changed, it sounds like someone else is speaking the same words to you, helping the stutterer to achieve the effect of following other people's speech when he or she is speaking alone, thereby improving stuttering instantly.

Stuttering is not something that children can control themselves. When parents find that their children have symptoms of stuttering, they should not blame the children first. Stuttering may cause children to suffer unfair treatment. As parents, we should be more tolerant and protective of our children so that they can recover better and faster, instead of just beating or scolding them.
