How to correct children’s stuttering?

Some parents have found that many children may stutter when they first start to speak. In addition, some children are curious about people who stutter and deliberately imitate stuttering, which results in the development of stuttering. If a child stutters, parents must pay attention and take reasonable measures to correct the child's stuttering. So how to correct a child's stuttering? Let’s take a look together!

Steps/Methods

1. Correct demonstration method

You use a kind and gentle expression and attitude, calmly say a sentence, and let the child learn it again. If the child does not speak well at the beginning, do not be impatient and guide him patiently. The child has made some progress.

2. Slow conversation method

When your child talks to you, let him speak slowly, especially the first sentence or even the first word, which should be spoken slower and slower. You should listen very patiently, don't interrupt or replace what the child wants to say with your own words. When your child finishes speaking, wait a second or two before responding. Answer the child slowly, and try to use the same words the child just used. When you have this intentional conversation with your child, the most important thing is to try to show your love for him.

3. Singing and reading

Children who stutter do not stutter when they sing or read a text. This is because of the sense of rhythm in this language activity. You can consciously sing songs, recite texts, and sing nursery rhymes with your children to help them master the rhythm of the language. Then further guide him to speak at the rhythm of reading the text, and transition little by little.

4. Role Playing

There is another situation in which children who stutter do not stutter when they speak, that is when they are not paying much attention to what they are saying or when they are talking to themselves. Because in this situation he doesn't care much about other people's attitude towards him. Therefore, you can let your child play a certain role through the game, so that he feels that it is not himself who is speaking, but the "role" who is speaking. By often role-playing and speaking, children will forget their stuttering. Then, by gradually transferring it to daily speech, the stuttering will be corrected.

In the process of applying the above-mentioned correction techniques, you can encourage your child to participate in more activities, interact with more friends, enhance self-confidence, get rid of inferiority, and actively carry out psychological guidance. I believe your child will be able to speak well soon.

5. Rhythm training method

When your child speaks a sentence that is prone to stuttering, you can clap the rhythm, saying one word for each beat, and speak slowly, word by word. You can also practice with the accompaniment of music. This kind of rhythm training often produces immediate results. Once these sentences are mastered, they will no longer be difficult to say and there will be no need for rhythm.

6. Don’t label stuttering lightly

There is one situation in which a child's speech does not require correction. That is, the child was talking to the adults in a hurry and at a very fast pace, and there were a few "stutters" in the middle. This is a characteristic of children, and it cannot be called stuttering. Even as an adult, almost everyone stutters at some point. This can be called temporary stuttering. Temporary stuttering will occur during the entire period of children learning to speak from 2 to 5 years old. This is different from habitual stuttering. If your child stutters temporarily, you don't need to worry about it. Never label your child as a stutterer rashly. Because this will really turn the child's temporary stuttering into habitual stuttering and become real stuttering.

Precautions

When children learn to speak, parents should do three things

Don't laugh. "Oh, you're already several years old, but you can't even speak properly!" Such words should never come from parents' mouths, because it will discourage children's enthusiasm for learning to speak.

Do not block. "Stop talking, it's disturbing!" Such words will make children unwilling or afraid to talk more, which is undoubtedly a blow to the child's language development.

Don't rush. "Don't be in a hurry, speak slowly." This is the best strategy. However, if you rush your child, it will only lead to "haste makes waste" and make the child more likely to stutter.

If your child has a stuttering problem, you must spend more time with your child and practice more in daily life. It may not be very good at the beginning, but after persisting in training for a period of time, you will find that your child has made great progress. Always encourage your children to speak more, as this will help correct their stuttering.

Generally speaking, stuttering is not a disease, but a language disorder. If you want to correct your child's stuttering, parents must have enough patience and confidence. They must give their children self-confidence and try not to laugh at or urge their children when they stutter. They should create a relaxed and pleasant speaking environment for their children.
