What should I do if water gets into a newborn's ears while swimming?

Nowadays, babies have swimming time as soon as they are born. They swim frequently, or when their mothers wash their hair or take a bath, water may get into their ears without paying special attention. Some people don't notice it very much, but the baby's eardrum is very fragile. If the water in the ear is not cleaned and can't be discharged for a long time, it will cause some diseases. Let's take a look at how to deal with water in the baby's ears!

If you see water in your baby's ears, you must deal with it immediately, otherwise it will cause infection and lead to otitis media. There is a membrane called the eardrum between the outer ear and the middle ear of the human body. In the middle ear cavity, there is a tube leading to the nasopharynx, which is medically called the Eustachian tube. In infants and young children, the Eustachian tube is shorter and thicker, making it more susceptible to infection.

When you know that water has entered your baby's ears, first place the baby on his side on your thighs, with the ear containing water facing downwards. Then press the baby's ear base tightly with your palm and then quickly release it. Do this action several times in a row and the water will be sucked out. You can also gently press the baby's lips with your fingers, let the baby open his mouth, and move the temporomandibular joint. This way, the water in the ear will flow out from the external auditory canal.

After completing the above steps, fix the baby's head, insert a sterilized cotton swab into the baby's ear to a depth of about 1CM and rotate it to wipe off the remaining water in the baby's ear. If the baby resists or shows resistance, do not force this action to avoid damaging the eardrum and causing perforation. You can wait until the baby falls asleep before wiping.

Many children suffer from hearing loss, otitis media and other ear diseases in the future because water enters their ears and is not cleaned in time when they are young. Therefore, when water enters the baby's ears, it is necessary to use the correct method to handle it to avoid any future problems.

Have you seen the harm of water entering the baby's ears? You should also know that you should gently wipe away the water in the baby's ears after swimming. Another thing to note when your child is swimming is that you must not leave his side. Even if he has some safety gear on him, no one can afford the consequences if something happens to the child. Your child must swim healthily.
