Reasons for green stools in infants and young children

Perhaps in daily life, many parents will find that after the birth of their children, their stools are sometimes very cellular, and sometimes they are normal. This indicates that the child's intestinal immunity is not fully developed. At this time, if the stomach and intestines are affected during the process of drinking milk powder, it will cause the infant to have green stools. Let's find out what to do in this situation!

Many infants have green stools, which is a normal physiological phenomenon. Especially for breastfed babies, their stools are more likely to be light green.

The color of stool is closely related to the chemical changes of bile. Bile is secreted by the liver. Hepatocytes continuously secrete bile, which flows into the hepatic duct and then into the duodenum through the common bile duct.

The color of bile is related to the type and concentration of bile pigments it contains, and can range from golden yellow to dark green. The bile in the upper small intestine contains bilirubin and biliverdin, which make the stool yellow-green. When the stool is pushed into the colon, biliverdin is reduced and converted into bilirubin, and the stool becomes yellow.

Therefore, the stool of babies fed with breast milk is acidic, and under the action of intestinal bacteria, part of the bilirubin is converted into biliverdin, making the stool light green, which is a normal phenomenon; while the stool of babies fed with cow's milk is alkaline, and part of the bilirubin is further converted into fecal cholin, so the stool is light yellow.

From the above article, we learned that infants and young children have green stools. The physical development of each baby is different, especially the stomach and intestines of children are very fragile and sensitive. If the milk powder or breast milk they eat contains something they are not adapted to, it may cause diarrhea in children.
