What should I do if my child sprains his ankle?

Children usually like to do sports very much, and they are likely to sprain their ankles during exercise. When you find that a child has sprained his ankle, try not to let him move again. It is best to take the child to the hospital for examination and treatment in time after some treatment to reduce swelling and relieve pain. Next, I will introduce some effective relief methods for children after they have diplomacy.

When to see a doctor: If significant swelling occurs within 30 minutes of the injury or if the swelling does not improve after 48 hours of home treatment, you should see a doctor.

Step 1: Rest

Stop walking immediately and find a stable place to sit down as soon as possible. If possible, find a support that can serve as a crutch and use it for at least 24 to 48 hours. Do not let the injured ankle joint bear weight.

Step 2 Cold compress

Cold compress can cause blood vessels to constrict, reduce bleeding, control the progression of injuries, and have the effects of stopping bleeding, reducing swelling, and relieving pain. For the first 48 hours, use an ice pack or cool towel for 10 minutes every hour. Remember to place a wet cloth between the skin and the cold compress, and observe the local skin color. Stop using it immediately if it turns purple or numb.

Apply hot compress. Do not apply hot compress when you are just injured, so as not to dilate blood vessels and increase bleeding. When the pain and swelling stabilize, you no longer feel swollen when you lower the affected foot, and the temperature of the injured skin returns to normal, usually after 48 hours, the bleeding has stopped and you can use hot compresses to help dissipate the blood stasis.

Step 3 Raise the affected foot

Elevate the injured foot with pillows or a backpack when you sit or lie down to rest. This can promote venous return, speed up the circulation of blood and lymph, and prevent them from accumulating in damaged blood vessels, thereby reducing local swelling and pain.

Step 4 Medication

Stop bleeding → When you are just injured, you can spray "Heal Fast" on the injured area and take Yunnan Baiyao capsules at the same time. Pain relief → Take aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, or ketoprofen to help relieve inflammation or pain. Promote blood circulation and dissipate blood stasis → After 48 hours, the bleeding stops and the swelling stabilizes. You can apply Wuhudan externally or take Huoxue Zhitongsan internally to dissipate blood stasis. You can also try some natural remedies, such as boiling pepper, ginger, and salt in water and then soaking the injured area.

After discovering that your child has an injury, it is best to find a place to sit down and rest on the spot. Try not to put force on the injured foot again, which will increase the blood stasis and may make the foot swell even more. After taking the above methods to deal with the problem in a timely manner, send the child to the hospital for formal treatment. During the education process, try to avoid touching the child's injured foot.
