Is red eyes a disease in children?

Children's eyes are the cleanest things in the world, because they are pure and have no desires. However, not all babies' eyes are so happy. Some children's eyes are often red and hungry, which makes parents feel very strange. Is the red eyes of children a disease? If so, how should it be treated?

When we say red eyes, we are referring to the white of the eye. The so-called red sclera refers to the redness of the bulbar conjunctiva covering the front of the eyeball. It may be caused by vasodilation and congestion due to local inflammatory stimulation, or it may be caused by rupture of small blood vessels in the conjunctiva due to non-inflammatory factors, which is subconjunctival hemorrhage.

There are many reasons for red eyes. Because the bulbar conjunctiva is exposed in front of the eyeball, it is easily attacked by trauma and microorganisms.

The most common cause of red eyes is eye inflammation, such as acute conjunctivitis (i.e. pink eye), keratitis, sty, iridocyclitis, etc.; allergic reactions can also cause red eyes, such as allergic conjunctivitis caused by allergies to certain eye drops (tetracycline, atropine, etc.), and spring conjunctivitis, which can also be accompanied by symptoms such as eyelid edema and stinging; eye surgery and trauma can also cause red eyes, which can be congestive or hemorrhagic; stimulation such as fever, crying, or air pollution can also cause conjunctival congestion and manifest as red eyes; severe coughing, vomiting, and vigorous rubbing can cause small blood vessels in the conjunctiva to rupture and bleed, manifesting as punctate or flaky redness under the conjunctiva, and the color may be dark red or bright red depending on the amount of bleeding and time.

If red eyes are accompanied by changes in vision, it means that the site of the eye disease is deep in the cornea or eyeball. If the vision is not affected, it indicates that the lesion is superficial or it is only a simple subconjunctival hemorrhage.

If a child's eyes are red for a long time, we should find out the cause of the symptom in time and then treat it symptomatically. If we don't pay attention to the child's red eyes, it will delay the child's treatment. Therefore, timely treatment is the key.
