Baby's stool has fishy smell

Baby's stool has fishy smell

Babies who are breastfed will not have any peculiar smell during the excretion process, including the smell of feces, but there will be a little bit of milk fragrance, because all they consume is breast milk, and there will be no indigestion. However, when the baby needs to add complementary foods, the frequency of bowel movements will gradually decrease, and they will become very firm, and naturally the smell will be a little bit heavier. Why does the baby's feces have a fishy smell?

Breastfed baby stool:

It is yellow or golden ointment, has a sour but not smelly taste, and sometimes contains milk lumps. 2 to 4 bowel movements per day. If your stool is slightly loose and slightly green, it is still normal.

Some babies have frequent bowel movements, 4 to 5 times, or even 7 to 8 times a day, but they are in good spirits, can eat, and continue to gain weight, which is also normal. After adding complementary foods, the frequency of bowel movements will decrease.

Artificial feeding and stool: For infants fed with cow's or goat's milk, the stool is light yellow or earthy gray, uniformly hard and paste-like, often mixed with milk curds and protein clots. It is drier and thicker than the stool of breastfed infants, with a slight odor, and occurs 1 to 2 times a day.

Mixed-fed baby's stool: When breast milk is insufficient and milk and starchy foods are added, the stool will be yellow or light brown, soft, and have a foul odor, and will occur 1 to 3 times a day.

It should be noted that the color and odor of normal stools of infants and young children are also affected by factors such as the addition of complementary foods and the taking of medications, and should be distinguished from abnormal stools.

Baby's stool smells fishy and contains mucus

If your baby's stool is fishy and contains mucus, it may be a sign that the baby is infected with bacteria. The stool of a breastfed baby is yellow or golden yellow, uniform like an ointment, but has no odor. The baby has frequent bowel movements, usually two to four times a day, and some have as many as seven to eight times a day. This is called physiological diarrhea.

When the child grows to a certain age, this diarrhea will disappear automatically. Children fed with milk have less bowel movements, one to two times a day, with a slightly smelly bowel movement. The baby is still in the process of breastfeeding, so as a mother, you cannot feed the baby too greasy, too cold, too sweet, or too salty food. If you choose to feed the baby with a bottle or formula, the bottle and nipple must be cleaned and sterilized when feeding the baby with formula to prevent bacteria from entering the baby's body.

There are many reasons why there is mucus in the stool. Digestive tract diseases, infectious diseases, and blood diseases can all cause fishy and mucus-containing stools.
