Fluoride content standard for children's toothpaste

Fluoride content standard for children's toothpaste

Fluoride toothpaste can be found everywhere in our lives. Basically, the toothpaste that everyone is using contains fluoride. For children, it is actually not suitable to use fluoride toothpaste, because children are prone to fluorosis if they use fluoride toothpaste, and it also poses a certain threat to the health of their teeth, so children should try to avoid using it.

Fluoride toothpaste is a safe, effective and economical way to prevent tooth decay, but babies should use fluoride toothpaste with caution because improper use may cause fluorosis. Although fluoride toothpaste can effectively prevent and treat tooth decay, the boundary between fluoride's anti-caries effect and the toxicity it produces is very small. Excessive intake will cause spots on teeth and cause fluorosis. Most patients with fluorosis are children, so children should use fluoride toothpaste with caution.

Fluoride can strengthen teeth, but too high a fluoride content can cause poisoning, which can cause white spots on the teeth and form fluorosis. In addition, when babies first start using toothpaste, they will inevitably swallow it. Swallowing large amounts of fluoride is also harmful to health. If too much fluoride is swallowed, it will lead to fluorosis, which will cause the developing permanent teeth to discolor.

Generally speaking, babies under 1 year old do not need to use toothpaste and can just brush their teeth with clean water. Children aged 1-3 years old often swallow toothpaste when using it, so you can use fluoride-free and swallowable infant toothpaste. After the baby is 3 years old, you can use children's fluoride toothpaste appropriately, but the fluoride content should not be too high to avoid fluoride poisoning in the baby.

How to choose toothpaste for your baby

Parents should not use adult toothpaste directly for their babies for the sake of convenience, because the fluoride content in adult toothpaste is often too high for babies and can easily cause damage to the baby's teeth. Some children's toothpastes have too high fluoride content and should not be chosen. It is recommended to choose toothpaste with 1/4 of the fluoride content in adults. Moreover, adult toothpaste is very irritating and is not suitable for babies.

Choose toothpaste according to your baby's age. The toothpaste suitable for babies of different age groups is different. It is recommended that parents choose some children's toothpastes with age groups indicated on them. For example, babies under three years old often swallow when brushing their teeth, so babies of this age should choose special toothpaste that can be swallowed.

Many children's toothpastes have fruity flavors and bright colors, which can easily attract the baby's interest. However, babies are prone to swallowing out of curiosity when using them. This type of toothpaste often contains added flavors and artificial colors. Swallowing a large amount will affect the baby's health. Therefore, parents should try to choose children's toothpaste with fewer additives.

Choose a toothpaste that produces less foam. There are three types of toothpaste: high-foaming, medium-foaming and low-foaming. The amount of foam depends on the amount of soap it contains. Multi-foam toothpaste contains a high amount of soap, which can easily irritate the oral mucosa in the mouth. Therefore, children should not use toothpaste that contains a lot of foam, so as to avoid long-term irritation to the baby's oral cavity.
