Refractive error in children

Refractive error in children

When children are young, parents must pay attention to protecting their children's eyes, because eyes are too important for children. Especially when children reach school age, they often have excessive eye problems. At this time, parents must observe whether their children have myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and other problems. These can be seen from life. So what is the matter with children's refractive abnormalities?

Refractive errors include myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, etc. Refractive errors can cause children to have low vision and even amblyopia.

Give your child a dilated eye test to determine what type of refractive error the child has and whether glasses are needed to correct vision. If glasses are necessary, they must be corrected as early as possible to avoid worsening vision.

1. Impact of refractive error on children

Children's vision development is a dynamic process. The critical period for vision development is before the age of 3, and the sensitive period is before the age of 12. If there are adverse factors during this stage, it will hinder the normal development of vision. Preschool children are in a critical and sensitive period of visual development. Many abnormal factors such as high hyperopia, astigmatism, anisometropia, strabismus, etc. will affect the establishment and development of children's binocular vision function.

2. Risk factors for refractive error

Dim indoor lighting can easily cause eyestrain and affect children’s vision development.

Turning on the lights while sleeping affects children's sleep quality, affects the relief of eye fatigue, and is more likely to cause poor vision.

Children's refractive abnormalities are related to their place of residence before entering kindergarten. Analysis shows that children living in rural areas have a wider field of vision and have more opportunities to see far than children in urban areas; second, children in urban areas receive preschool education earlier, resulting in a higher frequency of close-up eye use; third, economic conditions in urban areas are better than in rural areas, and the popularity of mobile phones and tablets has increased children's close-up eye use.
