Below we will introduce to you what to do if a child has a high fever of 38 degrees.

If a young child suddenly develops a high fever at night, the family can take the following cooling measures:

1. Keep the indoor temperature between 21℃ and 23℃;

2. Let the child rest in bed, open the blanket or take off excess clothes;

3. Feed the child with cold water or cold drinks frequently, 250 ml per night;

4. If the body temperature is higher than 39℃, cold compress the forehead of the child with a cold wet towel or ice pack, and change it repeatedly to facilitate heat dissipation;

5. Use warm water for sponge bathing. Place the child in warm water that is 4℃ to 6℃ lower than body temperature for 5 to 10 minutes, then wipe the whole body dry with a large towel and gently massage the skin until it turns red. You can also use warm water at 32℃ to 34℃ (preferably water that is not hot enough for the skin on the inside of an adult's wrist) to bathe the child, focusing on scrubbing the forehead, neck, armpits, groin and limbs. The entire sponge bathing time is 10 to 15 minutes, until the child's temperature drops to 38℃.

It should be pointed out that when infants and young children under 3 years old have a high fever, physical cooling methods should be used first. Generally, antipyretic injections and antipyretic drugs are not required to avoid collapse and drug toxicity reactions. Regardless of whether the fever has subsided or not, parents should take their children to find out the cause of the night fever as much as possible the next day.
