When to get polio vaccine

When to get polio vaccine

To prevent the occurrence of polio, newborns are required to receive polio vaccination after birth. So when is the best time to receive polio vaccination? Let's go through it step by step. The reason for getting the polio vaccine is that polio is very harmful to children, but it is preventable, so parents will get their children vaccinated against polio.

Polio vaccine (sugar pill) is an effective control measure to prevent and eliminate polio. Poliomyelitis is an acute infectious disease caused by the polio virus. The virus mainly invades the gray and white matter of the anterior horns of the human spinal cord, causing permanent damage to the gray matter, weakening the muscles innervated by these nerves and causing flaccid paralysis of the limbs. It is common in infants and young children, so it is also called polio.

This disease is preventable but difficult to cure. Once it causes limb paralysis, it can easily lead to lifelong disability or even be life-threatening.

Polio vaccine is a vaccine used to prevent polio. There are two types of vaccines available now. One is the live attenuated polio vaccine currently being used in my country, which is the familiar "sugar pill". It is made of live viruses with reduced pathogenicity. The other is called inactivated polio vaccine, which is a trivalent liquid vaccine made by inoculating polio virus type I (Mahoney strain), type II (MEF-1 strain), and type III (Saukett strain) into Vero cell culture and harvesting the viruses. After concentration and purification, they are inactivated with formaldehyde and mixed in proportion.

Polio vaccination starts when the baby is 2 months old:

The live attenuated polio vaccine (sugar pill) is given once when the baby is 2 months, 3 months, and 4 months old, with an interval of 4 to 6 weeks between each administration. When the baby is 4 years old, he will be given another booster vaccination. If your baby is older than 2 months but has not yet taken the sugar pill, you can take your baby for a booster shot at any time.

The inactivated polio vaccine is given once each time the baby is 1 month, 3 months, 4 months, and 18 months old.

Through the above introduction, everyone knows when the polio vaccination time is. As expectant fathers and mothers, you must not be lucky and think that your children will not get polio, so you don’t vaccinate them with polio. Otherwise, it will be too late to regret when your children get polio.
