Introduction to the process of blue light treatment for neonatal jaundice

Every baby is an angel given to us by God and the hope of every family. However, many newborns will suffer from jaundice when they are born. Doctors will recommend the use of blue light for treatment. So what is the process of blue light treatment for neonatal jaundice? Now let me explain it to you, and further reassure expectant fathers and mothers.

Neonatal jaundice is a common disease in newborns, also known as hyperbilirubinemia. The disease is mainly caused by increased bilirubin in children, which leads to yellowing of the sclera, skin and mucous membranes. Neonatal jaundice and pathological jaundice caused by any reason should be treated, especially for premature infants under 1 week and children with severe hypoxia, acidosis, intracranial lesions, and severe infections. Active treatment must be given as soon as possible to avoid adverse consequences. If not treated promptly, it will cause damage to the child's nervous system and even leave sequelae. Blue light therapy for neonatal jaundice is one of the most effective treatments.

Blue light irradiation is a simple, effective and fast-acting method for treating neonatal jaundice. Jaundice means that the baby's bilirubin level is too high. Bilirubin can absorb light. Under the action of light and oxygen, the fat-soluble bilirubin is oxidized into a water-soluble product, which can be excreted from the body through bile or urine, thereby reducing the serum unconjugated bilirubin concentration. The absorption band of bilirubin is 400-500 nanometers, especially at the wavelength of 420-440 nanometers, where the photolysis effect is strongest, and the wavelength of blue light is exactly between 425-475 nanometers. The therapeutic principle of blue light therapy is to convert the bilirubin in the body into other substances through light irradiation, so that the bilirubin that continues to accumulate in the body can find another outlet, and the symptoms of jaundice can be improved.

Parents should also note that since blue light can break down riboflavin, also known as vitamin B2, in the body, when the illumination duration exceeds 24 hours, vitamin B2 should be supplemented for newborns to prevent vitamin B2 deficiency. Since the children are treated with blue light, it is easy to cause water loss in the children's bodies. Therefore, they should be breastfed before treatment and given some water before feeding. This can not only avoid electrolyte imbalance, but also prevent the children from sweating profusely after radiation treatment and causing dehydration, fever, acidosis, etc.

Although we say that neonatal jaundice is a disease, parents do not need to worry too much, because there are still many effective treatments for neonatal jaundice, as mentioned above, blue light treatment, both safe and guaranteed. In fact, as long as the baby receives the most scientific treatment in time, jaundice will soon subside!
