Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common and mild but highly contagious infectious disease caused by a variety of enteroviruses and is easily acquired by children under 4 years old. The disease occurs at the turn of summer and autumn, with September being the peak season. It can cause herpes on the hands, feet, mouth and other parts of the body. A small number of children may develop complications such as myocarditis, pulmonary edema, and aseptic meningoencephalitis.

The main symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease are:

1. Most children develop the disease suddenly, first showing symptoms of high fever, with body temperature mostly above 38 degrees, accompanied by symptoms such as headache, cough, runny nose, and the body temperature persists.

2. One to two days after the child develops a fever, herpes can be seen on the oral mucosa and lips of the child. When the herpes breaks, ulcers will form, which are very painful. The child often becomes irritable, cries, drools, and refuses to eat.

3. 1-2 days after oral herpes, maculopapular rashes can be seen on the palms, soles and buttocks of the child, most commonly on the soles of the feet. The herpes are flat, round or oval in shape, ranging from as small as a grain of rice to as large as a pea, hard and containing turbid liquid, surrounded by a red halo.

4. The rash of hand, foot and mouth disease in children rarely appears on the trunk and face, and generally disappears in about 7 days without causing scars or leaving marks.

5. Hand, foot and mouth disease in children is a mild, self-healing disease. Most children have a good recovery. A few seriously ill children may develop myocarditis and encephalitis, but the possibility is very small.

The harm of hand, foot and mouth disease is relatively serious. If it is not treated in time, it may even endanger the life safety of the child. Therefore, early detection and early treatment are particularly important. Here, we introduce the issues that everyone is concerned about. I hope that the content here will help everyone understand the disease. I hope that the children can grow up healthy and happy!
