What to do if your baby has a fever and cold hands and feet

We all know that babies are an important role in every family, and we should always pay attention to the baby's health. So our baby may have fever and cold hands and feet. What causes this? What can we do to help the baby? Let’s take a look together below!

When a high fever occurs, the blood supply to the body's organs increases, such as the brain, by up to eight percent. If the high fever lasts for a long time, it will damage the internal organs, that is, it will "burn" the internal organs. In order to protect these important organs, the body will mobilize various regulatory factors to reduce the blood supply to the organs, so the blood vessels in the limbs will also contract, resulting in peripheral blood circulation disorders.

Children's body temperature regulation is not yet mature, and they are more sensitive to this type of vasoconstriction regulation, resulting in cold skin on the limbs, which is more common in children. It is recommended to keep the limbs warm and bathe them frequently with warm water.

Advice for when your child has a fever

When a child has a fever, physical cooling is recommended. If the temperature is below 38.5℃, bathe frequently with warm water and wipe the skin of the limbs and back with a warm towel until it flushes (the skin on the chest, abdomen and neck is sensitive and easily irritated, causing chills, so do not wipe it). Do this every 20 minutes or so to effectively reduce the temperature. You can even give your child a bath in warm water, just be careful not to let your child catch a cold again.

If the temperature is above 38.5℃, it is recommended to use Motrin (ibuprofen) to reduce fever, which is very effective. If you have not sweated or had a fever one hour after taking Motrin, and your body temperature has even risen above 39°C, you can use some 30% alcohol to wipe your body to cool it down (but the skin of babies is delicate and alcohol is very irritating, so it is not recommended for babies). If that doesn't work, you may need to go to the hospital for intramuscular injection of antipyretics and further treatment.

As long as the child's fever is not extremely high or lasts too long, there is no need to worry too much and just treat the symptoms. Because a child's fever is not necessarily a bad thing, there are at least three benefits: it means the child's immune system is working, a high body temperature can kill certain heat-sensitive pathogens, and it promotes metabolism (the saying "a fever makes you grow" makes sense).

I believe that through the above we have understood the situation of baby's cold hands and feet. If we want to ensure our baby's health, we must help the baby. We don't need to worry too much about these situations. As long as we do a good job of prevention and control, we can avoid harm to the baby by paying attention to the baby's condition in time.
