What causes red and swollen eyelids in children?

Children touch the hearts of their parents, and any discomfort of their children will make their parents anxious. Red and swollen eyelids are a common symptom in children, and many parents are at a loss as to how to deal with it. In fact, children’s red and swollen eyelids are not caused by a single reason. If handled incorrectly, it may cause greater harm. Therefore, it is important to understand why your child’s eyelids are red and swollen and to handle them correctly so that your child can recover as soon as possible.

Swollen eyes are one of the early signs of kidney disease in children, but parents do not need to panic when their children have swollen eyes, because kidney disease is not the only reason for children's swollen eyes.

Causes of swollen eyes in children:

1. Poor sleep. If you stay up late at night (watching TV, etc.), you will have less sleep time, and your eyes will be swollen when you get up in the morning. Some people will feel pain and swelling in their eyes. For example, some people are nervous and can't sleep well at night, and they may also have swollen eyes when they get up in the morning.

2. It is related to the sleeping posture. For example, some children occasionally do not use pillows, and their eyes may be swollen after sleeping for a night. However, some children never use pillows when sleeping, and their eyes will not be swollen. This may be related to personal habits.

3. It is related to drinking water. Some children drink a lot of water before going to bed, so they will have swollen eyes in the morning, which will disappear during the day.

The above eye swelling is normal, so if it is clearly caused by these reasons, don't worry. Eye swelling related to diseases mainly includes: skin disease, heart and kidney dysfunction, and angioedema.

5. Children's kidney disease causes swollen eyes.

After excluding other causes of eye swelling besides pediatric kidney disease, the edema may be caused by pediatric kidney disease. Since pediatric kidney disease is a chronic disease (except acute nephritis), there may be no obvious symptoms that make the patient very uncomfortable at the beginning of the disease. Therefore, after getting up in the morning, different degrees of eyelid edema is often an early symptom of kidney disease.

If the child has a good night's rest and none of the above non-renal causes cause the eye swelling, then parents should take the child to the hospital for relevant examinations to confirm whether it is pediatric kidney disease.

The simplest and most effective way is to do a routine urine test to see if the urine is normal. If necessary, other tests should be carried out under the advice of a specialist. In order to make a final diagnosis, it is convenient for early treatment of children's kidney disease, which is beneficial for timely control of the disease and can also avoid affecting the normal development of children due to kidney disease.

The above is an introduction to what causes red and swollen eyelids in children. It should be noted here that active and regular treatment of children's red and swollen eyelids is very important, but attention should also be paid to rehabilitation care. For children, eye hygiene care is the first priority, followed by dietary nutrition and proper exercise.
