Introduction to baby seborrheic dermatitis

Introduction to baby seborrheic dermatitis

Many friends may not know that seborrheic dermatitis can occur in babies. This is mainly because this disease is caused by excessive oil secretion and inflammation due to excessive use of skin care products in our lives. In fact, mothers may not know why their babies develop seborrheic dermatitis, so we recommend that mothers learn about baby seborrheic dermatitis introduced in this article.

Causes of seborrheic dermatitis in infants

Why do babies suffer from seborrheic dermatitis? It is currently believed to be related to endocrine, genetic, nutritional and infection factors. Infant seborrheic dermatitis almost always occurs within 3 months after birth, which is the period when the baby's sebaceous glands are most active.

However, every normal baby experiences this transient condition, and not all of them suffer from infantile seborrheic dermatitis. Genetic factors play a role. Since infant seborrheic dermatitis is more likely to occur in winter, biotin deficiency in the mother or poor digestive absorption in the infant are also contributing factors. Other infections such as Pityrosporum ovale, Streptococcus, or Staphylococcus may also make symptoms worse.

Seborrheic dermatitis treatment in infants

Because this disease can heal itself within a few weeks, the main treatment measure is to pay attention to the care of the child. When washing your hair or taking a bath, do not use strongly alkaline soaps or bath gels, and the water temperature should not be too hot. You can use the Skin Care Wash developed by the Beijing Institute of Children's Diseases. It is forbidden to use external medications casually. Irrational use of external medications will aggravate symptoms and prolong the course of the disease. Bathe with a mild, neutral soap and keep your scalp and folds clean and dry. You can apply a cream containing 1% neomycin or hydrocortisone cream appropriately (do not use strong corticosteroid preparations). Take B vitamins orally, such as B6, B2 or vitamin B complex.

Some newborns have large patches of yellow-gray fish-scale-like dandruff on their scalps. They accumulate into lumps, are greasy, and cannot be washed off. Some of them spread to the eyebrow area, nose wings, etc., which are irritating and itchy, making the newborns irritable and restless and affecting their sleep. Some people call it "cow dung head", meaning that this dandruff looks like dried cow dung. In medicine, it is called "seborrheic dermatitis". This is because the newborn is affected by the mother's estrogen, which causes the sebaceous glands to secrete vigorously. Newborns with seborrheic dermatitis have increased skin sensitivity, higher exudativeness, and are prone to allergies.

The above introduces in detail the causes and treatments of baby seborrheic dermatitis. I hope mothers can understand it better in their lives. When we treat baby seborrheic dermatitis in our daily life, we recommend that patients pay attention to their skin hygiene and avoid using soaps with strong alkaline properties.
