What effects does noise have on the fetus?

Many pregnant women often go to many KTVs and some bars and they like the very noisy environment very much. However, these strong noises will also have a certain impact on the fetus in the abdomen. Although the mother's various tissues and amniotic fluid structures can protect the fetus, the effect is very limited. There is almost no display function for some low-frequency sounds, that is, the fetus's auditory system can also hear these noises.

Some noises in life are very sensitive to damage to the fetus's hearing system. This impact will become more serious as the intensity of the noise increases. Noise that is not received in the expected process will cause fetal intrauterine growth retardation and low birth weight babies to be affected by noise.

Regarding the impact of noise on the fetus, it is believed that the most important harm is the damage to the fetus's hearing. There used to be a misunderstanding that the impact of noise on the fetus is transmitted through the mother's auditory system, so it seems that as long as the mother uses personal protective equipment such as earplugs, it will also protect the fetus's auditory system. In fact, the noise received by the fetus is transmitted through the mother's abdominal wall. When the pregnant woman's abdomen is exposed to strong noise, the fetus will also be exposed to strong noise.

Although various tissues of the mother's abdominal wall, the uterus, amniotic fluid and other tissue structures can protect the fetus' hearing, the effect is very limited, especially for low-frequency sounds, there is almost no attenuation function. At this time, it is equivalent to the fetus's auditory system directly contacting strong noise. Because the fetus's cochlea and other structures have not yet reached structural and functional maturity, its hearing system is very sensitive to damage from noise.

A recent Canadian study showed that fetuses that had been exposed to strong noise levels exceeding 85 decibels had already lost their hearing acuity before birth, and this effect would become more serious as the noise intensity increased. In addition, exposure to high-intensity noise during pregnancy may also cause intrauterine growth retardation and low birth weight of the fetus. There are also related studies that believe that noise stimulation of the fetus's inner ear will cause damage to parts of the brain and seriously affect the development of the brain, leading to mental retardation in infants or children after birth.

However, Professor Bao believes that whether the intellectual disability of infants or children is directly related to the fetal hearing loss and the mother's exposure to strong noise during pregnancy is worthy of further observation and research. As for whether noise has a teratogenic effect on the fetus, especially physical deformity, there is currently no authoritative conclusion at home and abroad.

The above is about the impact of noise on the fetus. Some noises are very sensitive to damage to the fetus's hearing system. Some low-frequency sounds have almost no display function, that is, the fetus's auditory system can also hear these noises. This impact will become more serious as the intensity of the noise increases, affecting the development of the brain. So try to avoid some noise in daily life.
