What to do if your child sleeps with his mouth open

Many parents will find that their babies always open their mouths when they sleep. In fact, this has a lot to do with the baby's physical development. Some babies may suffer from rhinitis, which will cause some communication barriers for the baby. Sometimes, communication with mothers will also be affected, and breathing will be difficult. So what should I do if my baby sleeps with his mouth open?

The baby's mouth breathing is not an intentional behavior, but is caused by certain diseases. Common causes include: rhinitis, sinusitis, enlarged tonsils, enlarged tonsils, etc. Due to the presence of these diseases, nasal breathing is often blocked, which hinders normal nasal breathing.

Long-term mouth breathing may affect the normal development of the baby's face, forming a more special facial appearance - sunken nose root, thick upper lip, shallow nasolabial groove, uneven teeth, etc., and the baby's facial expression is dull and lacks expression. This is a manifestation called proliferative body facies.

The future intellectual development of such babies will also be affected. Not only will they look listless, but they will also have poor memory and slow reactions.

What to do if your baby breathes with his mouth open while sleeping

1. Seek treatment from a specialist. If your baby has nasal congestion due to illness and has to breathe through the mouth. Therefore, nasopharyngeal diseases should be treated promptly to avoid the occurrence of nasal malocclusion and facial abnormalities.

2. Wear a special veil when sleeping. For babies who develop the habit of breathing through their mouths, put a small three-layer gauze mask on them when they sleep at night, leaving their nostrils exposed, forcing them to breathe through their nasal cavity.

3. Training of upper and lower lips and cheek muscles. Do upper and lower lip and cheek muscle exercises every day. For example, repeatedly use the upper and lower lips to clamp a piece of cardboard and quickly pull it out, three times a day, each time for 5 to 10 minutes. You can also clamp the magnetic card with your upper and lower lips until you get tired.
