Shoulder dislocation in children

Shoulder dislocation in children

Because babies' bones are in a developmental stage, they are very fragile. Parents should pay attention to the posture and movements of holding their babies in daily life, otherwise excessive force may easily lead to dislocation of some joints. In particular, the incidence of shoulder dislocation in children is the highest. So what is the emergency treatment method for shoulder dislocation in children?

Emergency treatment for baby dislocation

Once the baby has a dislocation, parents do not need to panic. It is not too difficult to restore the joint to its original state within two or three hours after the dislocation. If it takes too long, the surrounding tissues will swell and recovery will be difficult.

Care methods:

The baby will be in great pain after a dislocation. The first thing to do is to comfort the baby and then deal with it immediately. The dislocated joint will compress the nerves, and the ligaments and muscles will be stretched, causing extreme pain with the slightest movement. Simple dislocations are often more painful than fractures. The hands will hang down in front of the chest. You can fold a large scarf into a triangle and hang your arms around your neck. However, do not move the baby's affected limb at will to avoid secondary injury to the baby's affected part during the movement. Fix the affected part first and then apply ice compress, and go to the hospital for treatment as soon as possible.

Even if the joint is restored to its original position, injured ligaments or surrounding tissue may still require treatment. The joint cannot be moved for several weeks, and the pain is more severe than if it were a broken bone.

Issues that parents need to pay attention to after dislocation recovery

After the joint is repositioned, fixation is generally not required, but parents should be careful not to suddenly pull the baby's arm in the same way as lifting objects or change the child's clothes with rough movements, and never lift the baby up by the hand. To prevent dislocation from happening again and becoming a habitual dislocation. The baby is most vulnerable when his hands are stretched out with the palm facing up. Therefore, when parents support their baby, they should hold his elbow or upper arm. When a baby around one year old is learning to walk, parents should put their hands under his armpits.

If the baby has been dislocated for more than 24 hours or has a history of repeated dislocations, the popping sound or bouncing sensation during reduction may not be obvious due to local swelling, and the pain may not disappear immediately after reduction, but other symptoms can mostly be relieved. At this time, it is advisable to use a triangular bandage to fix the baby's elbows at a right angle for about a week.
