The dangers of pathological jaundice in children

Pathological jaundice is a common disease in newborns. This common disease is dangerous for children. Although it appears on the surface of the child's skin, it does cause the child to have unbearable itching and fever. Therefore, it must be treated in time when necessary, otherwise the disease will become more and more serious. So what are the harms of pathological jaundice to children?

Jaundice is more common in newborns than at any other age. Its causes are special and complex. There are physiological jaundice, pathological jaundice, and breast milk jaundice. These situations need to be treated differently and handled accordingly. If a child develops jaundice within 24 hours after birth or the jaundice develops too quickly and lasts for a long time, it may even be accompanied by anemia, abnormal body temperature, poor feeding, vomiting, and abnormal urine and stool color. In some cases, jaundice has subsided or alleviated and then reappeared and worsened, which is mostly pathological jaundice. Common causes of pathological jaundice include neonatal hemolytic disease, neonatal infection, biliary tract malformation and neonatal hepatitis.

Neonatal jaundice is very harmful to the children. A large number of case studies have confirmed that more than 90% of newborns whose bilirubin exceeds the warning line have abnormal brainstem auditory evoked potentials, and most of them can recover with timely treatment. Studies have also confirmed that pathological jaundice is positively correlated with the incidence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, learning difficulties, and integration disorders in children. The biggest harm of neonatal jaundice is the occurrence of bilirubin encephalopathy, which inhibits the brain tissue's utilization of oxygen and causes brain damage. Symptoms include drowsiness, weakened sucking reflex and hypotonia. In most cases, jaundice suddenly deepens significantly; then the eyes stare, and muscle tension increases intermittently. In severe cases, the hands are clenched into fists, the forearms are rotated inward, opisthotonos occur, and sometimes screams. It often leaves sequelae such as athetosis, eye movement disorders, deafness, intellectual disability or enamel hypoplasia.

If it is neonatal jaundice, you can do a sunbath and use ultraviolet rays to remove the yellowness. It is winter now, and you need to sunbathe for about half an hour. The skin should be exposed when sunbathing, so first lift up the trouser legs and sunbathe the knees for 5 to 10 minutes, take off the pants and sunbathe below the thighs for 10 to 15 minutes, then take off the diaper and sunbathe naked below the navel for 15 to 20 minutes, lift up the shirt and sunbathe below the chest for 20 to 30 minutes, and finally sunbathe the back for 30 minutes. When sunbathing, find a sunny and windproof location, and be careful not to catch a cold. In addition, you cannot expose the body to the sun through glass, as glass will block ultraviolet rays and exposure to the sun will be useless.
