What is the value of pathological jaundice?

Jaundice is a very common disease in our lives, and most of these diseases occur in children. Because for children, they need a process of adaptation to the external environment after they are born, and at this time, some jaundice will appear on the skin. Parents can give their children sunbathing treatment in time. So what is the value of pathological jaundice?

Generally speaking, babies will undergo a transcutaneous bilirubin test before being discharged from the hospital. This value is one of the indicators used by hospitals to assess whether a baby can be discharged. Even if the evaluation of jaundice is normal, the mother should not let down her guard. Since the baby was discharged early, the jaundice in the baby has just occurred and has not yet reached the most dangerous peak. Therefore, after discharge, especially within 2 weeks, it is necessary to closely observe the changes in the baby's jaundice and follow up in time!

look

Under natural light, look at the range of yellow staining in baby's skin. Jaundice generally follows the rule of "eyes (sclera) → face → neck → trunk → limbs → palms and feet". The order of etiolation is the reverse. Therefore, generally speaking, the baby's face will be more yellow than other parts of the body.

Press

When observing, mothers can gently press the baby's forehead and nose with their fingers. If the pressed part is not white, it is yellow, indicating the presence of jaundice. When the yellow dye is confined to the eyes and head and face, jaundice is mild; when the yellow dye develops to the trunk (just below the nipples of the chest), it is moderate and requires vigilance. At this time, the baby should be taken back to the hospital for a reexamination; if the skin becomes more and more yellow, even the limbs and palms turn yellow, it means severe jaundice. You need to pay attention to the occurrence of hyperbilirubinemia and must go to the hospital for treatment within a short time.

color

Observe the baby's skin color. The baby's skin is bright yellow, and yellow turns to red, which indicates that bilirubin metabolism is faster and jaundice is faster. On the contrary, if the skin color is grayish yellow, it means that the bilirubin metabolism is slow and you need to return to the hospital in time to check the nature of the jaundice.

Urine color

When observing yellow staining of your baby's skin, you should also pay attention to the condition of the urine. If your urine turns yellow (yellow diapers) or even turns soy sauce color, it is likely hemolytic jaundice and you need to see a doctor immediately

Poop

If the mother finds that the baby's stool gradually changes from yellow to white, like terracotta, and the yellow-stained part becomes larger, the baby should be taken to the hospital immediately. Whitening of the baby's stool often indicates that the baby may have a hepatobiliary disease, causing obstructive jaundice.

Breastfeeding

Mothers should observe their baby's feeding and mental state every day. Mild jaundice will not affect your baby's appetite. If the baby seems to be eating poorly, sucks weakly, does not like to feed, or even refuses to feed, accompanied by differences in mental state, drowsiness or irritability, sudden convulsions, direct crying, fever, vomiting, etc., regardless of whether the jaundice is serious or not, the baby should be taken to the doctor immediately to prevent the occurrence of bilirubin encephalopathy (kernicterus).
