What to do if a child has an eyelid cyst

What to do if a child has an eyelid cyst

If a child develops an eyelid cyst, it must be taken seriously. The main cause of eyelid cysts is eyelid stones. It is best to take the child to the hospital for relevant examinations and treatments in time. It can be surgically removed if necessary. Children must pay more attention to rest at ordinary times, try not to overuse their eyes, and do not let children play with mobile phones or computers for a long time. Let the children look at more green plants.

Most (80 percent) eyelid tumors are benign, such as moles, xanthelasmas, cysts, granulomas, hemangiomas, etc. A small portion (20 percent) are malignant tumors, such as basal cell carcinoma, sebaceous gland carcinoma, malignant melanoma, metastatic tumors, etc. The cause of eyelid malignancies is not entirely clear. But there is a malignant tumor called "basal cell carcinoma" that is related to long-term exposure to sunlight. Older people are more likely to develop malignant tumors.

Eyelid Tumors - Treatment

During surgical removal, deep cysts may sometimes adhere to the meninges, so care should be taken not to injure the meninges during surgical removal.

Meibomian gland carcinoma ranks second among eyelid malignant tumors in my country. It is more common in middle-aged and elderly women. They most commonly originate from the sebaceous glands of the meibomian glands and eyelashes. The upper eyelid accounts for about 2/3 of cases.

[Clinical manifestations] Initially, it appears as a small, tough nodule inside the eyelid, similar to a chalazion. It gradually increases in size, and the tarsal plate becomes diffusely thickened in patches. The conjunctival surface opposite the eyelid becomes a yellow bulge, appearing as a cauliflower-like mass that can quickly form an ulcer. If it originates from the sebaceous glands, it will appear as small yellow nodules on the eyelid margin. The skin overlying meibomian gland carcinoma is often normal. Clinically, initial lesions are often misdiagnosed as chalazions and treated as such, which can lead to recurrence. This disease is highly malignant and may metastasize to the preauricular lymph nodes.

[Treatment] For surgical resection, it is necessary to check whether there is no tumor at the resection edge to avoid recurrence. The mortality rate is about 14%.
