What to do if your 7-year-old child has a stuffy nose

It is a very normal phenomenon for babies to have nasal congestion. Generally, there are many reasons for nasal congestion. It may be caused by the baby's cold, or it may be symptoms caused by rhinitis. It is best to take the child to the hospital for relevant examinations in time, and then symptomatic treatment. Symptomatic treatment can control the disease in a short time and will not miss the best treatment time.

1. Drink scallion water. Take 5 green onions, remove the white parts and wash them, add 40 ml of water, bring to a boil and then simmer for 3 minutes, add a small amount of sugar, put it in the bottle, and let the baby drink when the temperature is right.

2. Wet compress. When you feel that your baby has difficulty breathing, heavy breathing sounds, or nasal congestion, use a wet towel to apply hot compress to the base of the baby's nose, which can temporarily relieve the nasal congestion.

3. Saline nose drops. Put 1 teaspoon of salt in 240 ml of warm water, put it in an empty eye drops bottle, hold the baby upright, drop 1 drop into each nostril, then let the baby lie down and use a nasal aspirator to suck out the secretions.

4. Make use of the wet cloth. If your baby has a runny nose, wet a soft towel or gauze, take a corner and twist it clockwise into a cloth twist, gently insert it into the baby's nasal cavity, then twist it counterclockwise and pull it outwards to bring out the nasal secretions. Repeat this several times.

5. Let your baby burp and sneeze. If your baby has nasal crusts, the easiest way is to let the baby cry for a while, wait for the tears to soak the crusts and soften them, then use a cloth twist to stimulate the nasal passages, make the baby sneeze, and knock out the crusts.

When your baby has a stuffy nose, don't worry too much. Paying attention to the following matters will make your baby feel more comfortable.

1. When using a cotton swab, be careful not to let the cotton swab hurt the nasal mucosa because the baby will move around and not cooperate.

2. Babies will use sneezing to remove foreign objects from their nostrils. They will also sneeze when suddenly exposed to cold air. This is normal. Unless you have a runny nose, there is no need to worry.

3. Letting your baby breathe in some moist water vapor can also make it easier to clear nasal secretions and relieve nasal congestion symptoms. You can put hot water in the bathroom to create steam, and let your baby inhale it for 3-5 minutes before clearing the snot.

4. Pay attention to the problem of dry air. The baby's nose will feel uncomfortable and the room needs to be humidified.

5. If the nasal mucus is dry and severely blocked, you can ask the doctor to use special small instruments to treat it. Do not treat it casually.

What are the effects of a stuffy nose?

It can lead to respiratory and digestive system disorders. Due to the irritation and infection of inflammatory secretions in the nasopharynx, children often suffer from cough, asthma, laryngeal spasm, bronchitis, bronchopneumonia and pneumonia. If nasopharyngeal secretions are swallowed for a long time, it may cause gastrointestinal dysfunction and constipation or diarrhea. A small number of children develop cor pulmonale or acute heart failure due to chronic nasal congestion and long-term hypoxia. Long-term nasal congestion will affect the physical and intellectual development of children.

Patients with nasal obstruction who breathe through their mouths for a long time may develop a series of pathophysiological changes. They often present with chronic illness, anemia, developmental disorders, lack of energy, mental retardation, poor memory, headaches, and frequent nocturnal teeth grinding. Children may suffer from enuresis.

Due to nasal congestion and long-term mouth breathing, I snore when I fall asleep, have restless sleep at night, and feel listless. Normally, the lungs are not fully expanded, which will eventually lead to pectus excavatum. Hypertrophy of the eustachian tube cartilage can hinder the movement of the eustachian tube cartilage, making it easy for middle ear effusion to occur and cause conductive hearing loss.

Due to nasal breathing disorders, the nasal mucosa becomes congested and the posterior end of the inferior turbinate swells. There is often nasal congestion and excessive secretions. The skin of the nasal vestibule and upper lip is irritated by nasal mucus for a long time, and dermatitis or eczema often occurs.

In addition, long-term nasal congestion may also lead to decreased sense of smell.

When you have a stuffy nose, you can soak your feet in hot water before going to bed at night. This can promote blood circulation and relieve the symptoms of a stuffy nose. At the same time, you can chop a few scallions and boil them into soup. Absorbing the heat from the scallions with your nose can also relieve the symptoms of a stuffy nose. If you have vinegar at home, you can boil the vinegar and inhale the vinegar vapor.
