Is hematuria in children life-threatening?

Both men and women can have hematuria, and it can occur in people of all ages. In comparison, young and middle-aged people are most likely to have hematuria. The causes of this symptom are very complicated. For example, the well-known urinary tract infection, in addition to hematuria, will also be accompanied by symptoms such as frequent urination and painful urination. So if a child has hematuria, will it be life-threatening?

Is hematuria in children life-threatening?

The color of normal children's urine is colorless and transparent or light yellow, and it contains protein and a small amount of red blood cells. However, many parents will find that their children have hematuria. At this time, they will be very worried, fearing that their children will have serious illnesses. Parents should not panic too much if their children's urine is red. They should find out the reason why their children's urine is red. Let me introduce it to you in detail below.

1. Children often eat red dragon fruit, blackberries, pickles or take medicines that can make urine red, such as rifampicin or iron supplements. This will cause the urine to turn red. After stopping these foods or medicines, the urine will return to normal. When children have hematuria, observe whether they have symptoms such as urinary pain, urgency, dizziness, headache, etc. If they do not have these symptoms, they need to continue to observe for a period of time.

2. For children with high activity, there is no other special discomfort except red urine. It may be that the hematuria is caused by strenuous activity. Because strenuous activity leads to a decrease in glomerular blood volume, the endothelial cells on the glomerular capillary wall change their arrangement position due to insufficient blood supply to form cell gaps. The red blood cells escape through the enlarged gaps to produce hematuria. This symptom is transient hematuria. If you pay attention to rest at ordinary times, the symptoms of hematuria will disappear.

3. Some school-age children are too weak, grow rapidly in height, and overextend their lumbar spine, which causes compression of the left renal vein, leading to hemodynamic changes and causing left kidney bleeding. This is common and requires a clear diagnosis. If a child has recurrent hematuria, it may be related to urinary tract infection, urinary tract stones, acute glomerulonephritis, kidney damage, renal purpura, or systemic disease. Appropriate examinations need to be done as soon as possible to enable better judgment and early treatment.

The above introduces whether children's hematuria is dangerous. If children have symptoms of hematuria, parents should not panic too much, but they should not take it lightly. They should take their children to the hospital for examination as soon as possible. In addition to the causes of physiological hematuria, it may also be caused by illness. As long as the disease can be discovered early and symptomatic treatment is given early, the symptoms of hematuria in children will disappear quickly.
