What to do if premature babies have phlegm in their throats

The respiratory system of premature babies is prone to problems. If they catch a cold, it is easy to catch a cold or even cause bronchitis or pneumonia, which is quite harmful to the child. When the child has phlegm in the throat, some methods should be used to encourage the child to cough up the phlegm, such as patting the back, steam or drinking water, etc. In addition, if the child has inflammation, anti-inflammatory treatment should be given in time.

What to do if premature babies have phlegm in their throats

1. Pat the back

Generally speaking, babies with respiratory diseases such as colds often have a lot of phlegm in their throats, but younger babies are unable to cough up the phlegm on their own, so parents need to help the baby expectorate at this time.

Dad or mom can let the baby lie on his side or hold him/her on his/her side during the coughing period, and then pat the baby's back. This can help expel phlegm. However, be careful to pat the baby's back gently, otherwise it is easy to cause internal injuries to the baby.

2. Drinking water method

"Boiled water is the universal medicine". No matter if you have a cold, fever, or cough, people always say you should drink more boiled water. Although there is no basis for this, drinking more water will never do any harm. Especially for babies with phlegm in their throats, drinking more boiled water can dilute the mucus secretions in the throat and help cough up the phlegm.

3. Steam method

Our mouth, ears, eyes and nose are all connected, so when the baby has phlegm in the throat, parents can try pouring boiling water into a teacup or a large pot, and then let the baby's mouth and nose face the rising water vapor and absorb it. This will make the phlegm thinner and easier for the baby to cough it out. But parents should pay attention to holding the container of boiling water tightly to avoid scalding the baby.

4. Diet therapy

Parents can also use dietary remedies to help the baby cough up phlegm, such as stewing Sichuan Fritillary Bulbs with pears.

5. Open windows for ventilation

The environment in which the baby lives is also very important. Dad or mom should open the windows of the baby's room regularly to ventilate the room, while also avoiding letting cold wind blow directly on the baby. In addition, it is best to control the indoor temperature at 18-22 degrees and the humidity at 60%-65%. Such an environment will help the baby to expel phlegm.
