What are the causes of hand, foot and mouth disease?

Among the common enteroviruses, Coxsackievirus is the culprit of hand, foot and mouth disease. In addition, other strains of Coxsackievirus A or enterovirus 71 can also cause hand, foot and mouth disease. Coxsackievirus is a type of enterovirus.

The infection site is the entire digestive tract including the pharynx, not the respiratory tract. The transmission route is fecal-oral, and only a few are respiratory. Hand, foot and mouth disease is caused by eating and drinking contaminated beverages, fruits, food, etc., and is not transmitted through breathing in crowded crowds. The site of infection is the intestine.

The virus can survive for several days at room temperature and can be quickly inactivated at 50°C. There is no surviving virus in boiled water. Therefore, the prevention of hand, foot and mouth disease mainly focuses on eating and drinking fresh cooked food during the epidemic period. Enterovirus is the most common and important virus in humans. Its infection site is the digestive tract, not the respiratory tract. Due to the absence of diarrhea, clinicians often misdiagnose enterovirus infection as gastrointestinal cold, fever of unknown cause, epidemic chest pain, viral encephalitis, viral myocarditis, etc. Treatment is often just symptomatic treatment.
