Standards for newborn health

After a newborn is born in the hospital, the doctor will check whether the baby is healthy. If the baby is premature or has some developmental defects, the baby will be immediately sent to an incubator. Babies usually cry loudly after coming out of the mother's body, which means that the baby is healthy. Of course, we cannot determine that the baby has no problems based solely on the baby's crying, so we also need to conduct a comprehensive examination of the baby to ensure the baby's health. Then let's look at other standards for newborn health:

Standard calculation of newborn pulse

A normal pulse rate for a newborn is 120-140 beats per minute.

Mothers can press on the artery with their index finger, middle finger and ring finger. The pulse is usually measured on the outside of the wrist (radial artery). For infants, the temporal artery (in front and above the ear) can also be measured. The pressure is determined by feeling the pulse beat.

The calculation unit is 1 minute. When measuring a baby's pulse, pay attention to the pulse rate (the number of beats per minute), the pulse rhythm (whether the pulse beats regularly), and the strength of the pulse. The pulse should be measured when the baby is quiet. Do not use your thumb to feel the pulse, because there are arteries on the thumb, which can easily be confused with the baby's pulse. When you find your pulse is irregular, compare it with your heart rhythm to ensure accuracy.

Standard 2: Look at the newborn's stool

The feces of newborns in the first two days are black, green, sticky and odorless. After feeding, it gradually turns golden or light yellow.

Within 12 hours after the little angel is born, the baby begins to excrete meconium, which will be completed in about two to three days. The normal stool of a newborn varies depending on the composition of the milk: breastfed babies have frequent bowel movements, 6-7 times a day, and their stools are golden yellow, thin, but without curds; cow's milk fed babies have less frequent bowel movements than breastfed babies, 4-6 times a day, and their stools are light yellow and drier. These are all normal phenomena.

If the frequency of bowel movements exceeds 6 to 7 times, and there is curdling, mucus, or increased water content, it is pathological and the cause should be identified and treated. If the baby's stool is too dry and has difficulty defecation, you can add an appropriate amount of honey instead of white sugar to the milk and feed it to the baby. The stool will become soft because honey has a laxative effect. If the frequent bowel movements do not affect the child's normal growth and development, there is no need to be nervous, just continue to observe.

Standard 3: Observation of newborn urination

Newborns begin to urinate within 24 hours after birth.

However, some healthy babies urinate after 48 hours. The urine of a newborn is generally transparent and light yellow. The amount of urine increases or decreases with the amount of milk the baby drinks, and the color of the urine also changes accordingly. At first, the baby urinates 2-3 times a day. As the amount of milk intake increases, starting from the second week, the baby can urinate about 20 times a day.

Some babies cry loudly when they urinate within 3-5 days after birth. When you open the white diaper, you may see brick red urine. Don't worry, this is because the newborn's kidney function is not perfect, and a lot of water evaporates from the skin and lungs when breathing. In addition, the baby does not eat much and is dehydrated, so the urine volume is small and concentrated. The urate in the urine cannot be completely dissolved, forming urate infarction in the kidneys, causing pain during urination and causing the baby to cry. As the amount of milk increases, the amount of urine increases, the urate is completely dissolved in the urine and excreted, and the baby can sleep peacefully.
