Causes of sebaceous nevus in newborns

Causes of sebaceous nevus in newborns

Many people in our lives will have sebaceous nevus. If they have this kind of sebaceous nevus, they must undergo surgery in time, otherwise it is likely to cause tumors. For newborns, having sebaceous nevus will affect their appearance, because most sebaceous nevus grow on the head and face, and will grow with age. So what is the cause of sebaceous nevus in newborns?

What is a sebaceous nevus

Sebaceous nevus is a hamartoma composed of sebaceous glands, also known as organoid nevus. Sebaceous nevus is relatively common, usually occurring at birth or shortly after birth, and is more common on the head, face, or neck, especially on the scalp.

Symptoms of sebaceous nevus

It usually occurs at birth or shortly after birth, and is prone to occur on the head, face or neck, especially on the scalp. Most are single shots. No hair grows on the surface of the scalp lesions. In childhood, it presents as a localized, hairless plaque that is slightly raised, smooth, waxy, and light yellow. During puberty, the lesions thicken and enlarge, with papilloma-like protrusions on the surface. In elderly patients, the lesions are often wart-like, firm, and brown in color. A small number of patients may develop adnexal tumors, such as sweat gland tumors, on the basis of this disease, and even metastasis may occur. Accompanied by abnormalities in other systems such as the nervous system, it is called sebaceous nevus syndrome, which is a subtype of epidermal nevus syndrome.

Nevus sebaceousis diagnosis

Diagnosis is not difficult based on the age of onset, the common sites of the rash and the manifestations. If histology reveals an increase in sebaceous gland tissue, or abnormal development of the epidermis, dermis or epidermal appendages, the diagnosis can be confirmed. Sometimes it is necessary to distinguish it from juvenile xanthogranuloma, verrucous nevus, and papillary syringocystadenoma, and a pathological examination is required at this time.

Nevus sebaceous treatment

To prevent the occurrence of tumors, complete surgical resection is necessary, and electrocautery, laser and other treatments can also be performed.
