The role of the neonatal incubator

The role of the neonatal incubator

In the obstetrics and gynecology area of the hospital, we usually see incubators with many babies in them. Most of them are relatively thin and have tubes inserted into their bodies. Inexperienced people often don’t know the purpose of the incubator. In fact, the incubator is mainly prepared for premature babies. Since premature babies are born early, it is generally difficult for them to adapt to the external environment. If they are not placed in the incubator in time, their lives will be affected.

What is the function of the baby incubator

The baby incubator is used to keep premature babies warm. Premature babies are very afraid of cold and have difficulty adapting to the external environment, so they have to be placed in the box. It has no effect on the child. It is equivalent to a small air-conditioned box that provides temperature for the child. Since the body functions of premature babies cannot fully contact the outside world (especially the respiratory tract is susceptible to infection), it is safest to keep them in an incubator, which the hospital will disinfect regularly.

The original intention of designing machines such as baby incubators is to provide a baby incubator with an excellent environment similar to the mother's womb, with purified air, suitable temperature and humidity. The core working principle is the temperature controller, which has functions such as setting temperature, real-time temperature split-screen display, and automatically entering the box temperature control state after powering on. Currently, most of the infant incubators used in China use computer technology to control the incubators. The incubators of different models from different manufacturers differ only in appearance, and their working principles, performance indicators and medical uses are basically the same.

The function of baby incubator:

1. Avoid infection

Premature babies have particularly low resistance. Putting them in an incubator avoids the possibility of contact with the outside world, and the air is free of dust and bacteria, which plays a role in protecting the newborn.

2. Keep warm

Premature babies are very afraid of cold and find it difficult to adapt to the external environment. The temperature in the incubator is controlled very reasonably and is based on the baby's body temperature. Moreover, the incubator is not completely closed, but has several air outlets, which can be opened and closed according to the different decisions of each child.

3. It won’t be bumped or dropped.

Disadvantages of baby incubators

Being in a constant temperature environment for a long time results in the body's inability to regulate itself and is unable to adapt to cold and hot environments to regulate its own temperature; the environment is stuffy and requires manual turning over and adding or removing clothes; excessive sweating causes eczema and heat rash, and the baby's skin is damaged after scratching.

Moreover, it is not suitable to breastfeed in an incubator. Breast milk contains human immune components and nutritional development components that are not found in milk powder. In other words, breast milk is natural, and milk powder is artificially processed, so it is naturally not as good as breast milk. In addition, hospitals now advocate breastfeeding.
