What to do if your baby eats crayons

What to do if your baby eats crayons

Children's growth requires education from their parents. When educating, we hope that the baby has various talents. For example, sometimes the baby is prone to eat crayons when drawing. Although they know that the crayon is not edible, the softness or hardness of the crayon is like chocolate, which can cause many misunderstandings among babies. In life, babies always accidentally eat things they shouldn’t eat. So, what should we do in this situation?

Category 1: Can induce vomiting

1. Washing powder, laundry liquid, soap:

The main ingredients are mostly detergents and some chemical enzymes, which are usually weakly alkaline in nature and can easily cause vomiting due to neutralization with gastric juice. In this case, induce vomiting and drink plenty of water. If too much is ingested by mistake, it may cause poisoning and lead to obvious digestive system symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. You need to go to the hospital in time for gastric lavage and symptomatic treatment.

2. Camphor balls:

After accidental ingestion, you can induce vomiting and drink egg white, tea, or boiled water, but avoid drinking milk or liquids with high fat content to avoid accelerating the absorption of the poison.

3. Rat poison, cockroach poison, etc.:

It is highly toxic. If accidentally ingested, drink egg white as soon as possible to protect the stomach and intestines, and then drink plenty of warm water to induce vomiting. It is strictly forbidden to consume oily foods such as egg yolks or fatty meat, otherwise it will accelerate the absorption of zinc phosphide and aggravate the poisoning. Be sure to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Category 2: No vomiting

1. Desiccant (roughly two types):

①White powder, divided into calcium chloride and calcium oxide. If calcium chloride is ingested by mistake, it is recommended to dilute it with water; if calcium oxide is ingested by mistake, do not use any acidic substances to neutralize it. You can immediately take milk or egg white orally, but avoid vomiting to prevent burns and seek medical attention in time.

②Transparent silica gel particles are non-toxic and can be excreted with feces if accidentally ingested. Drink more water to promote excretion.

2. Strong acid and alkaline detergents:

If you experience symptoms and signs such as burning pain in the mouth, throat, chest and abdomen, and large amounts of brown matter and mucosal fragments in the vomit, you should be alert to the possibility of burns and immediately take milk, soy milk, egg white or peanut oil orally. Avoid inducing vomiting, gastric lavage or enema to reduce chemical burns and seek medical attention as soon as possible. If it splashes into the eyes, rinse with clean water for at least 10 minutes and go to the hospital to check the corneal damage and receive corresponding treatment.

3.Battery:

Strong alkaline substances are highly corrosive and permeable. Do not induce vomiting, otherwise the battery will leak corrosive acidic substances and cause intestinal perforation. If accidentally ingested, you should swallow a large amount of milk or egg white.

4. Gasoline:

It is highly corrosive and can damage the gastroesophageal mucosa and cause ulcers, which is seriously life-threatening. Once discovered, please seek medical attention immediately. Vomiting is not recommended to prevent aggravating damage to the esophageal and laryngeal mucosa.

5. Sharp objects and tools:

Do not induce vomiting as it may damage the digestive system or even cause perforation. Seek medical attention immediately for endoscopic removal.

Category 3: Other items

1. Drugs (antihypertensive drugs, hypoglycemic drugs, motion sickness drugs, etc.): Overdose of drugs may cause adverse effects and may cause damage to liver and kidney function or even the nervous system. Please seek medical attention as soon as possible.

2. Toothpaste, mouthwash, etc.: It is not a big problem if a small amount is accidentally ingested. If a large amount is accidentally ingested, symptoms such as nausea and vomiting may occur, leading to acute poisoning, convulsions, and even heart failure. Seek medical attention immediately.

3. Mosquito repellent, insecticide, etc.: After accidental ingestion, it is recommended to drink strong tea, because the tannic acid in tea has the effect of precipitation and detoxification.

4. Round and blunt foreign objects: Pay attention to sudden coughing, breathing difficulties, etc. in children. Try to encourage children to cough to expel foreign objects, or use the Heimlich maneuver (applicable to children over 1 year old). Do not try to remove foreign objects with your hands. See a doctor as soon as possible, as time is life.
