How to stop your child from biting his lower lip

How to stop your child from biting his lower lip

The lips are part of the human face and their main function is to protect the mouth and teeth. I don’t know if you have noticed that some people in life like to bite their lower lips, and some even bite them so hard that their lips are scarred. In fact, the behavior of biting lips is formed from childhood. So how should parents stop their children if they find that they like to bite their lips?

1. Don’t Pay Too Much Attention

When seeing their baby biting their lips, some parents will become nervous and immediately tell the baby "Don't bite your lips". However, doing so will usually only reinforce the baby's behavior. It is better to divert the baby's attention through other means and not mention the "lip biting" issue verbally to the baby.

2. Satisfy your baby's need to bite

Babies at this stage usually have a lot of teeth, so mothers can provide their babies with more snacks, such as small breads, fruit slices, small desserts, biscuits, etc., to meet their oral activity needs. When the mouth is busy, the baby will bite his lips less.

3. Distract

When the baby bites his lips, parents can divert the baby's attention by letting the baby talk or playing games with the baby, so as not to give the baby the "opportunity" to bite his lips.

Parents who have the conditions can also take a short family trip, or stay with relatives or friends for a while. The living environment has changed, and the baby's attention will be focused on how to adapt to the new environment, which will also help the baby to get rid of some old bad habits.

4. Kiss and hug your baby more often

After all, babies often bite their lips mostly because they feel insecure. If adults often scare babies, walk away without telling them, or do not pay enough attention to them when they cry, they will engage in unconscious actions such as biting their lips, picking their nails, and biting their fingers. Usually, parents must pay attention to building up the baby's sense of security, kiss and hug the baby more often, and do not scare or intimidate the baby. If the baby does not feel anxious, these subconscious little movements will naturally not occur.

5. Let the dentist tell your baby not to bite his lips

Children are usually more afraid of doctors. Doctors’ words are more authoritative to children, and their words are often more powerful than those of their parents. If an adult says to a baby, "Baby, don't bite your lips!" the baby is very likely to ignore your words and may even bite more and more. Babies who lack sufficient attention often like to attract the attention of adults through some rebellious little behaviors. At this time, you might as well take your baby to see a dentist and let the doctor tell him "Don't bite your lips."
